Treat Muslims as your own, not as ‘items of vote market’: PM Modi tells BJP meet

Kozhikode: Contending that the definition of secularism has been distorted, PM Narendra Modi invoked Jan Sangh ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya on Sunday to say that Muslims should be treated as “your own” rather than seeing them as “items of vote market”.Addressing the BJP’s national council meeting in Kozhikode, he said his govt’s mission of ‘sabka sath, sabka vikas’ is not a political slogan but a commitment to ensure welfare of the last man in the society. In his speech, Modi spoke at length about secularism, balanced and inclusive growth and need for electoral reforms while paying tributes to Upadhyaya on his 100th birth anniversary. “These days, the definition has been distorted. Even nationalism is cursed these days,” he said. While talking about life and contribution of Upadhyaya, Modi quoted him as saying: “Don’t reward or rebuke Muslims. Empower them. They are not items of vote market nor are they substance of hate. Treat them as your own.”At the conclusion of the two-day BJP conclave aimed at making inroads in Kerala, the PM  traced the party’s journey from the days of Jan Sangh and asserted that “we never compromised with our ideology”.He said if the BJP had compromised with the ideology, it could have attained power long back.PTI

Likening the anger in the country over Uri attack to that witnessed in the 1965 war, PM Narendra Modi on Sunday maintained that those responsible for the terror strike will be punished. He also sent out a message to people of Kashmir, which has been witnessing unrest for over 2 months, saying that “peace, unity and harmony” are the ways to resolve problems and expressed confidence that all issues can be addressed through discussions. In his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ he paid tributes to the 18 soldiers who died in the Uri attack. In his 35-minute broadcast, PM said he also wanted to “speak” to the people of Kashmir.“people of Kashmir have started to understand the anti-national forces clearly. And as the reality is dawning on them, they have started distancing themselves from such forces and have started walking on the path of peace,” he said. thehindu
Rahul Gandhi should retire, BJP will be hegemonic force for next 15-20 years: Ramachandra Guha
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/54499233.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=cppst
In his new collection of essays, Democrats and Dissenters (Allen Lane), Ramachandra Guha writes, among other things, about the vacuum in the Opposition, how the Congress's voice of dissent is becoming feeble. In an interview with Charmy Harikrishnan in Delhi, he talks about how the BJP will be the determining force in Indian politics and what that means for the country. "There are still very many people — too many, I would say — who think that the Congress can revive as a national political force. But my sense is that what we are probably seeing is the BJP emerging as the only national party in the foreseeable future. BJP, in terms of its role in Indian politics not in terms of its ideology, will be like the Congress in the 1960s and '70s. There will be some challengers — the Communists in Kerala, Trinamool in Bengal and the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu — but BJP will be overall dominant. That was exactly how the Congress was — the Communists came to power in 1957, the DMK in 1967, the Akalis became quite strong in Punjab — but overall there was no national alternative. Swatantra Party, founded by C Rajagopalachari, tried and failed. Now the AAP may try and it will be interesting to see how far it will go. But for the next 15 or 20 years, I think, the BJP will be the hegemonic, determining force in Indian politics." economictimes
Converting LoC into International Border 'only option' with India, Pakistan: Natwar Singh
http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ani/converting-loc-into-international-border-only-option-with-india-pakistan-natwar-singh-116092500059_1.html
New Delhi:  Upset by the Uri terror attack that claimed the lives of 18 soldiers, former foreign minister and seasoned diplomat K. Natwar Singh on Sunday said converting the Line of Control (LoC) into the International Border (IB) is the only solution in sight to end the bitter rivalry between India and Pakistan over J&K."There is no solution, as every method has been tried. Eventually, I am not saying today or tomorrow, we can take 10 years, 15 years or 20 years, but in my judgment as a private citizen, and (ex-J&K CM) Farooq Abdullah has also said, eventually the LoC will become the International Border, that's all," Natwar Singh told ANI, adding that it is the only solution, as there is no other solution.ANI
After Uri incident, China focuses on Kashmir-One Belt One Road link: the hindu
http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/after-uri-incident-china-focuses-on-kashmirone-belt-one-road-link/article9146638.ece
Growing tensions between India and Pakistan is persuading the Chinese establishment to focus on the Kashmir issue as an impediment to Beijing’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, with the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) at its core. The Uri incident, which has escalated India’s efforts to garner international support to dock Pakistan as a sponsor of terrorism, after 18 Indian soldiers were killed in a cross-border raid, and Islamabad’s re-energised drive to internationalise Kashmir, has fueled considerable anxiety in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Ministry has on 2 occasions since the Uri incident, called upon India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and resume their stalled dialogue.Apart from the nuclear dimension, which turns military tensions between India and Pakistan into a lurking threat to international peace and security, analysts say that the Chinese have a more pressing and immediate, concern — the fallout of Indo-Pak friction on the viability of the CPEC. Earnest’s comments came in response to a question on simmering of relations between the two south Asian nuclear-armed neighbours in the wake of a separatist attack on an Indian army camp in occupied Kashmir. tribune
Uri strike: Long war forced on India by Pakistan, says Shah
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/uri-strike-long-war-forced-on-india-by-pakistan-shah/article9146805.ece
BJP President Amit Shah on Sunday said the Uri attack was part of a “long war” forced on India by Pakistan and declared that the country is committed to giving a “strong reply” to Pak-sponsored terrorism. Shah while echoing PM Narendra Modi’s view that those responsible for the terror strike last Sunday will not go unpunished said the attack was a result of Pakistan’s frustration after security forces foiled 17 infiltration attempts. “The final victory will be ours,” he said.Taking on Pakistan, Shah also asserted that it is no less than a war crime if terrorism becomes part of a govt’s policy.PTI

Bhopal: Muslim leaders and clerics have launched a signature campaign against the Draft National Education Policy 2016, alleging the minorities will be further marginalized if the policy is implemented “forcibly”.A letter addressed to the HRD minister demands the govt to review and redraft the new policy keeping “the spirit of inclusiveness of all sections of the society and acknowledging varied heritage of the country”.“It (draft policy) will be detrimental to the interest of not only minorities but also an effort to contravene in the Constitution, disturb secular fabric and federal structure of the country,” the one-page letter says.“We would also like to bring to your notice that replacing Indian history with mythology and the Indian philosophy with Hindu theology, Sanskritization by promoting Vedic culture and Gurkula traditions and making yoga mandatory in schools are totally unaccepted to minorities in general and Muslims in particular,” it adds. The letter demands minority institutions remain outside the purview of the Right to Education Act which mandates 25% seats be reserved for poor students. One of the inputs for Draft National Education Policy says the issue of extension of Clause 12 (1) (c) of RTE Act to govt -aided minority institutions will be examined in view of larger national commitments towards the economically weaker sections. Coordination Committee for Indian Muslims Madhya Pradesh secretary Masood Ahmed Khan said the signature campaign was launched on Sept.17.“Letter will be sent to Central govt before Sept.30.”On its website, Ministry of HRD has sought views and suggestions about the education policy from public which should reach it by Sept.30.HT

Kashmir curfew lifted: Valley returns to normalcy with busy markets, traffic jams
http://www.firstpost.com/india/kashmir-curfew-lifted-valley-returns-to-normalcy-with-busy-markets-traffic-jams-3019792.html
It was for the first time in last over two-and-half months that the Sunday market stayed open at Lal Chowk, Kashmir’s main market, which had usually seen deserted roads and closed shops. The curfew, which was imposed in the Valley for the last 79 days, was lifted from all parts of Kashmir on Sunday but restrictions on an assembly of people remained in force in most areas as a precautionary measure. The footpath vendors had laid out the used clothes, shoes, and handicraft products on the charpoys as people thronged the market. People had lined up outside petrol pumps and heavy movement of vehicles during the day caused traffic jams at many places. In the new protest calendar that was issued by the separatists in Srinagar, it was for the first time that the relaxation was given from 2 pm to 6 am on Sunday. In the previous week, there was no relaxation in the strike even during Eid. Even during those two days of the Muslim festival, three people were killed as youth clashed with the forces. However, Sunday was unusual as would be the evenings when according to Hurriyat calendar, shops, and other business establishments stay open between 6 pm to 6 am. Protest calendar has changed the routines of the people who work in Kashmir. Working hours for many have spilled into the night and in a large number of areas of Kashmir normalcy returns in the evening after daylong clashes with the forces and the blockades on the roads are removed.firstpost
Kashmir: Rights activist Khurram Parvez’s arrest opens up can of worms

Srinagar: Khurram Parvez has been the most prominent face of human rights movement in Kashmir in recent times and his arrest under the controversial PSA has attracted condemnation and raised questions on the state’s procedures to tackle unrests. He was picked up by the police on September 15 in Srinagar a day after he was stopped from travelling to Geneva to participate in a UNHRC session. The condemnation of his arrest hasn’t only been domestic. NYT in its Friday editorial wrote that Parvez should be “released and allowed to travel”. Parvez and his organisation JKCCS, has played a key role in documenting and reporting the violations of human rights in troubled Kashmir. During the current unrest, Parvez constantly criticised the killings and blindings of civilians and raised his voice about several allegations of rights violations by security forces. While some fear that his arrest is to scare the civil society and clamp down the human rights movement in the Valley, others say that it has focussed international spotlight on stealthy arrests, alleged illegal detentions and use of the PSA in the Valley.HT

Pune: Tens of thousands of Maratha community members on  voluntarily poured out on Pune’s streets and marched in unison, bringing the city to a grinding halt. All major roads in core city areas and beyond went out of bound as the Maratha community headed for Council Hall to present their memorandum of demands to the district collector. It all began before dawn as people from different corners of Pune district started pouring into the city by which ever mode possible. The police had blocked all the major roads at quite a distance for vehicular traffic leading to Deccan area from where the “Marathi Kranti (mook) Morcha” took off at sharp 10.30 am after garlanding of the statue of Sambhaji Maharaj. There were no speeches, no sloganeering neither the defeaning roar of loudspeakers which is so common in a city like Pune. Each one seem to shun TV cameras as they zoomed on the “march of the millions.” Be it school kids, collegians, activists, professionals or the elderly, they all marched step by step, not raising a single slogan or unnecessarily exercising their vocal chords. Hundreds of them held aloft banners in bold seeking a halt to the misuse of the Atrocities Act “which has wrecked the lives” of scores of Maratha community members. The political leaders were either not visible or got lost in the sea of humanity that held high the much-adored saffron flag — a cherished symbol Chhatrapati Shivaji era. NDTV Exclusive report claims: Are Donors On Global Terror Watch Lists Funding Saudi-Style Islam In India?
http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/exclusive-are-donors-on-global-terror-watch-lists-funding-saudi-style-islam-in-india-1466030
New Delhi:  From time to time, the Indian govt has warned of the dangers of the rise of puritanical, Saudi-style Islam in India, most recently, during the unrest in Kashmir, when it warned it will not allow a 'Wahhabi theocracy' to take root in the Valley. But such statements are not backed up with facts about the funding and growth of this strain of Islam, known interchangeably as Wahhabism or Salafism, with its roots in Saudi Arabia.NDTV scrutinised records of the past three years of the govt's FCRA website, where Indian NGOs have to log overseas funds received.Among states receiving funds from Islamic charities, UP had the highest number: Rs. 55 crore. Of that amount, the most seemed to be concentrated in a cluster of NGOs on the state's eastern border with Nepal. In the town of Itwa, we visited one of those institutions, the Al Farooq group.Set up, according to its promotional video, 25 years ago by a Qatar-based Salafi preacher and a local Maulana, the institution received Rs. 2.34 crore in the last 3 years from a trust run by the royal family of Qatar. Shaikh Shabbir Ahmed Madani, the founder of Al Farooq group established in UP.The money to this institution is shown as coming for construction and expansion of buildings - schools orphanage, and a madrassa. But it is run on core Salafist beliefs, which are dismissive of Sufi Islam practiced in the Indian subcontinent. According to the FCRA records 3 of the top 5 NGOs in Karnataka which received funding from Islamic charities are in Shimoga:Madeenath Ul-Uloom Education Trust, Rabiya Basri Rahamat-Ulla-Hi-Allayha Charitable Trust, and Sadiya Educational and Charitable Trust, all 3 of which received a total of Rs. 36.5 crores. All 3 NGOs are running schools and madrassas and all are Salafist in nature. They also share a common thread of foreign funding, from International Islamic Charitable Organisation, based in UAE and Kuwait.
Surya Namaskar opposed to fundamental concept of Islam: PIL in  Bombay high court
http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/surya-namaskar-opposed-to-fundamental-concept-of-islam/story-YQvxaPfW61p0djrMADCE4N.html
Mumbai: Surya Namaskar — a yoga routine known as ‘sun salutation’ — is opposed to the fundamental concept of Islam and is therefore a violation of the fundamental religious rights of students studying in Urdu medium schools run by Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), municipal councillor has contended in his PIL filed in the Bombay high court. Rais Kasam Shaikh, councillor, challenged the civic body’s Aug.23 decision making Surya Namaskar and yoga mandatory for students studying in 1,285 civic schools during their morning prayers. Shaikh said that of these 1,285 schools, 400 schools are Urdu medium institutions, in which about one lakh students study. A majority of these are followers of Islam, he added.By making yoga mandatory, the BMC is attempting to impose upon these students “a system and practice completely foreign to the followers of religions such as Christianity and Islam,” read the PIL.“Articles 25 to 28 of the Constitution of India guarantee a fundamental right to every citizen to preach, practice and propagate the religion of their choice including the practices and systems adopted by such religions,” it stated. “The resolution — so far as it makes it compulsory to follow a particular system or practice — is therefore in violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution,” it added.“The fundamental concept of Islam affirms that God is one and incomparable,” Shaikh has asserted in his PIL. “It disowns any other God except the one God (Allah),” it stated. The sun is considered to be a god in Vedic literature and thus, a sun salutation is in opposition to Islam under Article 25 of the Constitution, stated Shaikh.HT
'We're victims of our own exodus,' riots refugees condemn NHRC Kairana report

Meerut: Liaqat Ali, who now lives in Kairana, remembers how he barely made it out of his village alive. 3 years ago, a mob made its way into Shamli district's Bawri village and chopped off his foot. He later limped to Kairana because he thought of it as an "oasis of communal harmony" during a time of conflict.Ali these days tackles his disability while trying to earn a living for his family, but the NHRC report on an alleged "Hindu exodus" has him worried. Days after NHRC blamed worsening law and order on riot-displaced families who settled in Kairana in 2013, Ali said the uprooted lot were "victims of their own exodus". Liaqat is not alone in all this.Other families told TOI that far from being "criminals", they were only trying to rebuild their lives. NGOs working for the rehabilitation of riot-refugees in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli also hit back at NHRC and said there were no gangs being operated by riot-refugees."I live with my wife and 5 children in Kairana now. Only we know how we survived the massacre. They (the mob) entered our house and hacked my right foot off. We managed to get out of the village alive but that incident changed my life forever. I now ride a rickshaw in Kairana for a living but I don't get that many passengers," Ali said. "I heard about the report which said that riot-refugees are criminals. It is far from the truth. What crime will we commit? We are the victims here."TOI
Muslim youths allege they were asked to ‘go to Pak’

New Delhi: 2 Muslim youths have alleged that they were asked to “go to Pakistan” when they requested faster service at a prominent dhaba in Delhi’s Connaught Place on Saturday afternoon. The alleged remark resulted in a scuffle between the two youths and the dhaba staff. 2 parties, however, reached a “compromise” after police intervention. dhaba manager, meanwhile, accused the two youths of creating a ruckus at the eatery and getting out of the mess by using the hostile situation between India and Pakistan to further their argument. Identified as Salman and Harris, the two are residents of Old Delhi and work for a pharmaceutical company. They were in Connaught Place on Saturday to attend a meeting. The duo visited the dhaba around 3 pm to have lunch when the incident occurred. “When I requested quick service after placing my order, one staff member, Saroj Das, told me to go to Pakistan if I was in such a hurry,” Harris said. thehindu

New Delhi: Unlike the DU and JNU campus, walls in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have no posters, paintings, or graffiti reflecting the political mood of the campus and its students. Instead, there are signs warning students that they are under CCTV surveillance. For years, the poll process for electing new student representatives is in force at DU and JNU, but students of Jamia till today are fighting for their demand to reinstate the students’ union that was scrapped ten years ago.Jamia unit of Students Islamic Organisation (SIO), the students’ wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, has been active on campus by staging various protests demanding the reinstatement of the union. “Students’ union gives a common platform to students in universities to fight for common interests. But this opposition to student union and political activities on campus makes one assume that having political democracy produces evil consequences,” an SIO member said.asianage
