Centre’s affidavit on triple talaq goes ‘against Islam’: Barelvi, Deobandi clerics oppose govt
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bareilly/Clerics-say-Centres-affidavit-on-triple-talaq-goes-against-Islam/articleshow/54757391.cms
Bareilly: A day after the Center submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court for abolishing triple talaq, clerics from both Barelvi and Deobandi sects said the affidavit is against Islam and that the points mentioned about women's rights are baseless. Clerics said that though the Centre gave example of a few countries banning triple talaq, these were Muslim countries but not Islamic, as the constitution of Islamic countries is entirely based on the Quran and Hadith. Clerics said that they will present their side in the apex court.National general secretary of All India Jamat Raza-e-Mustafa, Maulana Shahabbudin Razvi, said, "Centre should have discussed with clerics before moving an affidavit in SC. The claims made in favour of women in the affidavit are wrong. Though the affidavit says that a few other countries have banned triple talaq, but these countries are Muslim and not Islamic. The constitution of Islamic countries is entirely based on the Quran and Hadith and at present, no country in the world is fully following them." "A delegation of renowned clerics of Sunni Barelvi sect will soon meet PM Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to oppose the affidavit submitted in SC against triple talaq. We will give them a memorandum and inform them why triple talaq cannot be termed illegal," he added.Maulana Asjad Raza Qadri, who is city qazi of Bareilly, said, "We have contacted a lawyer and will soon present our side in the Supreme Court with the help of All India Muslim Personal Law Board. Triple talaq is valid according to Islam."Mufti Saleem Noori, spokesperson of Dargah Aala Hazrat - the seat of Sunni Barelvi sect which has influence over Muslims in many districts of the region, said, "A few people who are against Islam have incited a handful of women who are demanding that triple talaq should be termed illegal. However, these few women should not be regarded as the voice of entire Muslim community."Clerics from Deobandi sect also criticized Center's affidavit demanding a ban on triple talaq. Mufti Abu Zafar Nomani Al-Qasmi, Bareilly general secretary of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind - said, "We stand with all India Muslim Personal Law Board.Centre has no right to interfere with the Islamic law.""According to the Islamic law, triple talaq is legal. Even if few countries have banned it, we cannot do so considering the faith of the community in the Islamic law," said Mufti Mohammed Mian Qasmi, who runs a Deobandi madrassa in Bareilly.TOI

We will continue to defend triple talaq: Muslim Personal Law Board
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/we-will-continue-to-defend-triple-talaq-aimplb/article9202546.ece?homepage=true
New Delhi: All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) says it will continue to defend triple talaq, though the Union govt filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on Friday against the practice. AIMPLB member Kamal Farooqui said the govt’s affidavit was filed without taking into account the Board’s views, despite it having written to both PM  Narendra Modi and Ministers concerned.“We don’t claim to represent all Muslims, but we do represent some. We wanted our views to be taken on board, and yet we are not surprised that they weren’t,” Farooqui said. He said BJP-led govt was using the personal law to run its “own agenda” against the Muslim community. “Affidavit will be firmly contested by us, it is against the Constitutional rights accorded to us, the SC has no power to legislate on religion. There are at least two statutes that allow application of Shariat,” he said. On whether the AIMPLB was contravening rights enjoyed by women in other communities by opposing the abolition of triple talaq (done by other countries), Farooqui said it was a specious argument to cite feminism. “Talaq is one of the most undesirable of acts mentioned in the Koran, it is not to be easily allowed. Islam is the first institution to bestow women the freedom of walking away from a marriage if they cannot cope with the relationship. It is a contract and women can, if they want, stipulate that the man may not have powers of pronouncing suo motu divorce. Such a provision [to do away with triple talaq] is present in Nikahnaama,” he said. Muslims, he said, were being unduly treated by govt that turned a blind eye to personal laws or religious observances of other minorities.thehindu
Uniform Civil Code is a conspiracy against Muslims: Board member Dr. SQR Ilyas
http://www.siasat.com/news/uniform-civil-code-conspiracy-muslims-1037975/
Hyderabad: Dr. Qasim Rasool Ilyas, member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board while reacting on the affidavit submitted by the Central Govt told that implementation of Uniform Civil Code is a conspiracy against the Muslims of this country. He further told that AIMPLB was not surprised at this act of Govt because it is according to the expectations. He also told that Govt of India has prepared a secret plan to implement Uniform Civil Code without caring for Constitution of India and the present laws.He informed that so called individuals and organization which are very less in number are pointing fingers at Muslim Personal Law so that an opportunity could be provided to the Govt for interfering in Personal Law.He mentioned that not a single clause of the Affidavit filed by AIMPB has been responded. He reiterated that constitution of India has guaranteed profession of all the religions but under the pretext of injustice to women, Muslim Personal Law is being targeted. He further mentioned that Islam has done full justice to women. The cases of divorce and polygamy are found more in other religions. He pointed out that in all 4 schools of Islamic though, triple Talaq is similar. Islamic jurists have clearly mentioned that if the husband has an intention to pronounce divorce one time and even if he repeats the word (Talaq) it will be counted as one incidence. If a person is ignorant of Muslim Personal Laws and if he pronounces the word (Talaq), it would be treated once. There is a difference of opinion among the Muslims about triple talaq but all agree that divorce could be given in three stages. Islam discourages the institution of Talaq.Siasat

Uniform Civil code a Modi tool to divert attention: AAP
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-kerala/civil-code-a-modi-tool-to-divert-attention/article9203504.ece
Kozhikode: AAP has criticised Modi govt for using the ‘emotional issue’ of a uniform civil code to deflect the attention of the media and the people from bigger issues facing the nation. At a joint press conference here, senior party leader Somnath Bharti and national spokesman Deepak Bajpai alleged that govt was raking up the ‘divisive agenda’ of civil code now with the intention of politicising the issue. “Modi govt  is using the issue to deflect the media’s attention,”  Bajpai said. “It is using the temple, triple talaq, and uniform civil code issues intentionally to deflect people’s attention from core issues.”He said a uniform civil code was one of the `lighthouses’ in the Constitution along with eradication of poverty and other larger goals. The govt  was now harping on the code issue, which had been debated for so many years, to create divisions among the people and to divert their attention. “Code issue is a farce,” he said. As of the triple talaq issue, Bajpai said the issue was now with the Supreme Court and that the AAP would go with the court verdict.the hindu

Pakistan a ‘fly–by-night operator’, misusing UN forum for ‘territorial aggrandisement’: India

UN: Hitting back at Pakistan for again raising the Kashmir issue at the UN, India termed the country as a “fly–by-night operator” saying Islamabad “flagrantly” misuses the forum of the world body for its “territorial aggrandisement”. Exercising the Right of Reply, Minister in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Srinivas Prasad, strongly rejected remarks made by Pakistan’s envoy to UN, Maleeha Lodhi, in which she had said that non-implementation of UNSC resolutions for a plebiscite in Kashmir is the “most persistent” failure of the UN.“We are constrained to take the floor to exercise our Right of Reply because we have just heard one country – Pakistan – make reference to the Indian state of J&K  in a rather self-serving and disingenuous attempt to bring an extraneous issue to this committee,” Prasad said during General Debate of the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee here yesterday.PTI

New Delhi: Over a few weeks in the summer of 2011, India and Pakistan staged two of the bloodiest cross-border surgical strikes in which at least 13 soldiers were killed, and six of them decapitated. 5 of those heads were carried across the border as trophies — 2 to Pakistan and 3 to India.Official documents, video and photographic evidence accessed by the The Hindu, chillingly capture the two cross-border raids and the brutality of the tit-for-tat cycle which seems far deadlier than what is publicly acknowledged.Major General (retired) SK Chakravorty, who planned and executed the operation as the chief of Kupwara-based 28 Division, confirmed the raid to The Hindu. However, he refused to discuss further details.Pakistani raiders struck a remote army post in Gugaldhar ridge in Kupwara, on the afternoon of July 30, 2011, surprising the 6 soldiers from the Rajput and Kumaon regiments. 19 Rajput Battalion was to be replaced by 20 Kumaon around the time the Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) struck. Attacking team took back the heads of Havildar Jaipal Singh Adhikari and Lance Naik Devender Singh of 20 Kumaon. Calcutta HC lifts Puja curbs on the eve of Mohram, slams Bengal ‘bid to appease minorities’
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/calcutta-hc-lifts-puja-curbs-slams-bengal-bid-to-appease-minorities-3073102/
Kolkata:  Calcutta High Court has held the time limits set by the West Bengal govt  for Durga idol immersion next week, on account of Moharram, as “arbitrary” and said the order was a “clear endeavour” by the state to “appease the minority section of the public”.While noting that “we live in difficult times” and it would be “dangerous to mix politics with religion”, the order of October 6 by a single-member bench of Justice Dipankar Dutta said no decision should be taken that could pit “one community against another”, and that “intolerance would rise in the event of such arbitrary decision” of the govt .“There has been a clear endeavour on the part of the state govt to pamper and appease the minority section of the public at the cost of the majority section without there being any plausible justification. The reason therefore is, however, not far to seek,” the court added. Bijoy Dashami, the day of the Durga idol immersion, falls on Oct.11 this year. The tazia procession for Muharram is to take place the next day.Directing the police and civil administration to work together to identify routes for immersion processions and for tazia to be taken out by Muslim community, taking care to “ensure that the routes do not overlap”, Justice Dutta said that “no effort” had been made to “satisfy” the Bench that “processions (tazia) on eve of Moharram are an inseparable part of the mourning” associated with Moharram.Noting that “there has never been a holiday” declared by the state or Centre on the eve of Muharram to “facilitate processions (tazia)”, the court said, “Administration has failed to take note of the fact that Moharram is also not the most important festival of people having faith in Islam… To put it curtly, the state govt  has been irresponsibly brazen in its conduct of being partial to one community, thereby infringing upon the fundamental rights of people worshipping Maa Durga.” indian express

Mandsaur, for instance, is believed to be the home town of Mandodari, Ravana's wife.Namdeo Vaishnav Samaj of Mandsaur believes that since Mandodari was a native of the town, Ravana is respected as the learned son-in-law. A 35-feet tall statue of Ravana is installed in the Khanpur area of Mandsaur. "We remember Ravana for his knowledge of all the Vedas and his devotion towards Shiva. Burning his effigy is seen as a sign of disrespect towards him and so, 'Ravana dahan' is never done in this town," said Ravi Ranka, a cloth merchant in Mandsaur. As per Hindu customs, women cover their heads in front of their in-laws. And interestingly, since the town treats Ravana as their son-in-law, women cover their heads while passing-by or praying at the Ravana temple. On the day of Dussehra, the locals in Mandsaur start praying to Ravana in morning.Prayers end with chants of "Hail Dashanan, Hail Ravana". Noorul Islam University hands over nano satellite to ISRO

Thiruvananthapuram: Noorul Islam University (NIU), Kanyakumari, on Saturday handed over a nano satellite, NIUSAT, to ISRO which will launch it into space along with 20 others using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) next month. Satellite will help in disaster management and can also map pollution and crop patterns across the globe. Around 145 students, mostly of aerospace and aeronautical engineering department of the varsity, have worked on the project for several years. The satellite has been equipped with a multi-spectral camera with 30 m resolution and 60 square km area of coverage. Once the solar panels of the satellite are deployed after launch, it can monitor the stress on crops caused by diseases or lack of proper irrigation. “Varsity wanted to focus on a programme that could help in disaster management as areas such as Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam were devastated by the tsunami. Hence, programme was kick-started in 2007,” said programme director AE Muthunayagam. A specialised control station has been set up in a four-storey building inside the varsity premises to control 15 kg satellite. As per conservative estimates, around Rs 40 to 50 crore has been earmarked to realise the project. The varsity and students can help NGOs and entities from across the globe to monitor their assets in land. The satellite has an expected lifespan of over a year. Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam ceremonially handed over the documents of the satellite to University Chancellor A.P. Majeed Khan. Deccan Chronicle.

New Delhi: JNU’s plan to introduce short-term courses in Indian culture and yoga is unlikely to take off with the university’s top decision making body rejecting a proposal in this regard for the second time. The proposal to introduce 3 short-term courses in these subjects had come last year against the backdrop of right-wing organisations, including RSS, insisting on propagation of culture in educational campuses to promote India’s rich heritage and restore its cultural identity. Following various communications from the HRD Ministry and UGC, JNU had last year circulated a draft of three courses among its various schools and departments for their feedback. The proposal was rejected by Academic Council,JNU statutory decision making body, in November. PTI

Growing list of republicans call for Trump to step down; Trump apologised, but said would "never withdraw"
http://www.ndtv.com/world-news/a-growing-list-of-republicans-call-for-trump-to-step-down-1471976
Republican Party plunged into an epic and historic political crisis Saturday with just a month to go until Election Day, as a growing wave of GOP lawmakers called on defiant presidential nominee Donald Trump to drop out of the race in the wake of a video showing him make crude sexual remarks. The fallout from the tape published by The Washington Post - in which Trump bragged in obscene language about forcing himself on women sexually - threatens to endanger the party's hold on both houses of Congress in addition to White House, which many Republicans now fear is lost. The episode also comes ahead of Sunday's second presidential debate in St. Louis, which was already a crucial moment but could determine how widely the damage spreads.By mid-afternoon Saturday, more than 2 dozen Republican lawmakers had called on Trump to leave the race, often touting vice presidential nominee Mike Pence as an alternative. Trump, who offered a qualified apology for the remarks in an overnight video statement while also attacking former president Bill Clinton, told The Post he would not drop out under any circumstances."I'd never withdraw. I've never withdrawn in my life," Trump said in a Saturday morning phone call from his home in Trump Tower in New York. "No, I'm not quitting this race. I have tremendous support."WashingtonTimes
