SC adjourns Maharashtra beef ban hearing for 8 weeks
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/supreme-court-adjourns-maharashtra-beef-ban-hearing-for-8-weeks/story-KisrGb5JkyudZlnGTaVlrM.html
New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing on ban on beef in Maharashtra and its export for 8 weeks. The apex court had on Sept.2 issued a notice to the Maharashtra govt on this matter.Earlier, the top court had issued notice to BJP-led state govt on a petition challenging a Bombay high court order, permitting consumption of beef brought from states that allow cow slaughter. Around 36 beef dealers associations across Maharashtra had in August filed a petition in the top court challenging the ban.The dealers want the court to permit the slaughter of cattle - bulls and bullocks, not cows — of more than 16 years of age. They said that after the age of 16, cattle are too old to be used for farming and other activities.Petition has challenged the constitutional validity of Maharashtra Animals Preservation (Amendment) Act,2015, that bans slaughter, possession, consumption and import of beef.ANI
`Why protect only cows when 70% milk supply from buffaloes'
http://epaperbeta.timesofindia.com/Article.aspx?eid=31808&articlexml=Why-protect-only-cows-when-70-milk-supply-28112016004026
New Delhi: Why protect cows only when 70% of the country's milk supply is from buffaloes, dalit academic Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd asked at the Lit Fest on Sunday. “This is a clear case of black against white we want black out, just as in the demonetization drive.“Cow protection laws in force in as many as 24 states across the country infringe on Dalit rights, Ilaiah said. Dalits, he said, care for cattle when they are alive, they also skin dead animals, dispose of the carcasses.“With these laws, the leather industry, cattle rearing and skinning of dead animals all get affected.“ Former diplomat Pawan Varma and RSS functionary Rakesh Sinha were also part of the panel discussing `cow nationalism'.TOI

Sunday will be weekly holiday not Friday for Govt-run high madrassas in Assam: State Govt
http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ians/friday-no-more-weekly-holiday-for-high-madrassas-in-assam-116112800958_1.html
Guwahati:Assam govt  has decided to discontinue the weekly holiday on Friday in some of govt-run high madrassas in the state, said Health & Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.Sarma said that the state Education Dept.has already issued instruction to those madrassas to function like other schools on Friday. The minister said it came to his notice only recently that some madrassas observe weekly holiday on Friday."It was recently that during a meeting with education officers, I found this strange thing that the govt-run high madrassas in three districts, including Lakhimpur, Naogaon and Morigaon, observe holiday on Friday," minister said."We know that official weekly holiday in Pakistan and Bangladesh is on Friday, while in India, the US and Europe, Sunday is the weekly holiday," he said, adding that there cannot be two rules for holiday. The Education Department has already instructed that the practice will be discontinued and there will holiday on Sunday and not Friday. The erring headmasters of those madrassas will be suspended, it warned.Ex-minister and Congress leader Siddique Ahmed, however, slammed Sarma over the decision and said that the minister wants to say that Muslims are second class citizens in Assam."Sarma is saying that Assam is not Pakistan or Bangladesh, meaning Muslims are second class citizens in Assam. Muslim community will boycott Sarma," Ahmed said."He (Sarma) is trying to divide the people of the state on religious lines and pitting one community against the other," Ahmed added.-IANS

Cut politics, find Najeeb, High Court tells Delhi Police
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1161128/jsp/frontpage/story_121784.jsp#.WDw3Qhp97IU
New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Monday sternly asked the city police to cut through politics and track down Najeeb Ahmed, the JNU student missing for 45 days since a scuffle with members of a rival union on the campus.A bench of justices G.S. Sistani and Vinod Goel said there could be “something more” to his disappearance as no one can just vanish from the heart of the national capital.“This is the heart of India, the national capital. No one can just disappear from here. It creates a sense of insecurity in people. If he disappeared, then there is something more to that. All angles have to be explored,” the bench said. The court also asked why the Delhi Police’s status report does not mention the alleged scuffle between Najeeb, 27, and some members of ABVP, a students’ union linked to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.PTI

Lakhs of Muslims hold rally in Nanded, demand quota slam govt for anti Muslim Personal Law move
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/aurangabad/Muslims-hold-huge-rally-in-Nanded-demand-quota/articleshow/55653887.cms
Aurangabad: Close on the heels of peace rallies organised by the Maratha and dalit communities across state, an umbrella organization of various political parties and social and religious organizations of Muslims on Sunday conducted a peace rally in Nanded to press their long-pending demand for reservation for Muslims. The rally was organised under the banner of Muslim Aarakshan Sangharsh Kruti Samiti, and the organisers claimed that more than 5.5 lakh people, including a large number of women, youth and senior citizens, participated in the event. Representatives of the Marathas and dalits also took part in the first of its kind rally held in Nanded city.Later, the representatives handed over a memorandum to Nanded district collector Suresh Kakani. The rally was organized in a disciplined manner and the participants did not raise any slogan and no community flag was used by the organizers. Only one national flag mounted on an open jeep was leading the rally. The organisers claimed that it was the first time in Maharashtra that a large number of women participated in a rally. Religious scholars, lawyers, teachers, students, healthcare professionals, businessmen and engineers were at the forehead of the rally. The main demand of the agitators was 10% reservation for Muslims. The other demands were, protect Muslim Personal Law, stop attacks on Muslims and dalits in the name of 'gauraksha', not target innocent Muslim in the name of terror, award death sentence to culprits of rape and murder cases, implement Swaminathan Aayog and provide reservation to the Maratha community without disturbing the quota of OBCs. Though the political leaders and social activists refrained from delivering speeches, select girls and boys expressed their feelings, justifying the demands. One student criticized the govt for allegedly ineffectively handling the issues of Muslim reservation and targeting Muslims and dalits in the country. There was anger among many protesters against the govt in power giving controversial statements about Muslim Personal Law and the rights of women in Islam. TOI

Delhi: Dalit-Muslim unity call
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1161128/jsp/nation/story_121736.jsp#.WDwudRp97IU
New Delhi: Around 10,000 Dalits, Muslims and tribal people from 25 states yesterday gathered at Delhi's Ramlila Grounds, from where calls went out for unity among these weaker sections and for Muslim job reservations. Mahasangram rally was an initiative by the Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind and the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations."Give Muslims reservations in jobs," said Ashok Bharti, founder of the Dalit-Adivasi umbrella body."Who decided the limit of 50 %  (on the volume of reservations)? The court did, and Parliament can change it. It must declare that every backward community will be represented (in jobs) according to its population."Bharti alleged that the demonetisation was a conspiracy to exclude tribal communities and Muslims from the economy. He pointed to the low bank penetration in tribal areas and the reluctance on many Muslims' part to open bank accounts because they believe that charging interest is un-Islamic."Many states, such as Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, have been created ostensibly for tribal communities but have been captured by the Manuwadis," Bharti said."Don't be fooled. Those who want to loot your caravan will not take you to your destination; only the Dalit-Adivasi-Muslim caravan can do that."Ex-MP Mahmood Madani, , said: "If we (Muslims) only fight our own battles, we will never succeed. If we put our selfishness aside and stand up for other oppressed people, Allah will help us all."A source close to Madani said: "If Dalits and Muslims get together, the BJP will be unable to sow communal tensions as it needs Dalit foot soldiers (to do so). Also, Dalits and Muslims together form a vote bank larger than the BJP's." telegraphindia

The Supreme Court has refused to order an investigation into the documents recovered during raids at the offices of Aditya Birla Group and Sahara saying they are not authentic or credible enough. Some of the documents purportedly mention bribes paid by these companies to a number of politicians, including Narendra Modi, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Sheila Dikshit, among others .The bench of Justices JS Khehar and Arun Mishra told the petitioner, the NGO Common Cause, that ordering an investigation merely on the basis of an unverified entry in a document could have far-reaching implications."If we accept what you say, then somebody can make an entry that I sent PM this much of money... See how far-reaching this could be. We are not shying away from taking action against anybody but you must have something even prima facie to show wrongdoing. We cannot initiate proceedings just because you name a big man. There has to be something," the court said, according to a media report.  Catch news

New Delhi:In a major crackdown since March this year, drug regulators of seven states have alleged that 27 medicines — sold by 18 major drug companies in India including Abbott India, GSK India, Sun Pharma, Cipla and Glenmark Pharma — are of “substandard” quality, citing grounds such as false labelling, wrong quantity of ingredients, discolouration, moisture formation, failing dissolution test and failing disintegration test. These include key drug brands of eight top-tier companies, which are the leaders in their respective molecule categories (pharma companies sell the same molecule under different brand names) with a market share ranging from 47 %  to 92 %. Of the 18 companies, only 2 said they had stopped sale of the affected drug batches and just one said the affected batch had been recalled from the market. Tests on the 27 medicines were done by drug regulators of Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. 10 other companies that were alleged to be selling substandard drugs are Alkem Labs, Cadila Healthcare, Cipla, Emcure Pharma, Hetero Labs, Morepen Labs, Macleods Pharma, Sun Pharma, Wockhardt Pharma and Zydus Healthcare. Indianexpress

Amritsar: Ex-general secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Kiranjot Kaur, on Saturday urged the state govt  and the Centre to make it mandatory for restaurants and hotels to mention if they serve halal meat on their menu card. "Guru Gobind Singh's hukam (order) was not to eat halal, the meat which is prepared according to Muslim law," Kaur said, adding that making such a rule would be an apt way to commemorate the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh. She said the Sikh code of conduct mentioned 4 transgressions: Eating halal, using tobacco, dishonouring hair, and having an extra-marital relationship. New Delhi: There has been a jump in the number of people under watch in India for their “links” to the Islamic State (IS), a senior Home Ministry official said.IB, during a presentation at the annual DGP conference in Hyderabad, said 450 people were under surveillance for the alleged links, up from 250 names till last year.Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who sat through the presentation, is learnt to have told top officials that the police needed to be sensitive while making arrests in terror-related cases, and if by mistake, someone had been arrested and later found innocent, then he would be the happiest if that person was released. An official said IS recruiters began by identifying possible candidates who ‘share’ or ‘like’ pro-IS literature, and then encourage them to share more content before trying to inspire them into travelling to IS-controlled areas in Iraq and Syria. The govt  has been working closely with Intelligence agencies in the UAE, Syria and Turkey to cut off the routes for Indians.“The most preferred route for Indians is going to Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Bahrain on a tourist visa and from there to Turkey. Once in Turkey, it is easier to cross to Syria. Turkey has tightened vigil along its border and deported at least six Indians when they were trying to cross over to Syria,” the official said. The Hinu

Rebels have lost most of the northern neighbourhoods in besieged east Aleppo, a monitor said on Monday, as the army pushed an offensive to retake the whole of Syria's second city. Mosul: Iraq's sectarian political leaders have plunged back into a dispute over the status of Shi'ite armed groups, undermining efforts to reunite the country as its troops press on with the assault of Mosul, Islamic State's biggest stronghold.Forty days into the biggest ground offensive in Iraq since US-led invasion of 2003, about a quarter of the city has been taken by US-backed govt units on the eastern side. Western part could prove far more dangerous, Major General Najm al-Jubbouri, one of the army's top commanders, told Reuters. The slow progress was overshadowed by the sectarian political quarrel that erupted in Baghdad on Saturday when Shi'ite lawmakers forced a law through parliament legalising the mainly Iranian-backed paramilitary units known as Popular Mobilisation forces.

New Delhi: Communist China continues its anti-Muslim campaign and this time its target is halal food, which the administration believes "spreads pan-Islamist tendencies in the market", the country's state-run media reported. Halal food is food prepared according to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran. Islam lays down how meat that is to be consumed is slaughtered and that's called 'halal' meat. China has a Muslim population of more than 23 million, mostly living in the country's north and northwest. And China will "seriously address the problem of hyping up, twisting and expanding the halal food concept," a senior religious affairs official said on Saturday. This, "amid worries that religion is intruding more into secular life in the country", wrote Global Times.TOI
