Leaders from different religions come together for Peace & Humanity
http://www.indiatomorrow.net/eng/leaders-from-different-religions-come-together-for-peace-humanity
New Delhi: In the backdrop of the growing communal rift in the society, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind's call for Peace and Humanity witnessed leaders of different religions coming together on one stage here on Saturday. In one voice, they supported the need for an intensive campaign for establishment of peace and humanity in the society. Speaking at the inaugural of Jamaat's 15-day nationwide Peace & Humanity campaign (21 Aug - 3 Sept), eminent social activist and writer Ram Puniyani said: Situation is worsening. Communalism of all religious groups is bad. Today communalism of Hindus calls itself nationalism. Gau Raksha is a political tool.Supporting the campaign, he said: "Today lots of wrong things are being spread against Muslims and Christians. Therefore, common people need to be approached in order to remove their misunderstandings. "Representing the Jain community, Kastur Muni, patron of Vishwa Ahimsa Sangh said, "Our thoughts and words should not trouble others; they in fact should please us and others."Speaking on the occasion, Dr John Dayal, Secretary-General of the All India Christian Council said that it should be clear that minorities are not seeking unity against Hindus. There is no default religion of India; but what happens at the launch of a war plane or a govt  project, is open for all to see.Earlier in his opening remarks, Syed Saadatullah Hussain, vice president of Jamaat and national convenor of the campaign, said, "Some forces want to divide the society; they actually want to push the society to a civil war. This is dangerous indications and all people who believe in peace and humanity must stand up to save the society and the country."In his speech, Navaid Hamid, national president of All India Muslim Majlise Mushawarat, strongly criticized Sangh ideology."Sangh is not an institution; it is actually an ideology. As long as this ideology persists, peace and humanity will remain in danger. Until and unless this ideology is crushed, peace can't be established in the society," said Hamid. He also criticized the upcoming New Education Policy formulated by the current BJP-led NDA govt.Magsaysay awardee and eminent social activist Dr Sandeep Pandey highlighted the division in the society in Gujarat post 2002 riots. Ayodhya saint and peace activist Yugalkishore Shastri also spoke on the occasion. At the end, Jamaat conferred Sadbhavana Award for their outstanding work in the field of communal harmony to Ram Puniyani, Sandeep Pandey, JS Bandukwala and Yugalkishore Shastri of Ayodhya. Jamat-e-Islami Hind to fight against "divisive forces" through peace & humanity campaign: TOI
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Jamat-e-Islami-Hind-to-fight-against-divisive-forces-through-peace-and-humanity-campaign/articleshow/53782190.cms
New Delhi: Without naming the BJP led NDA govt at the Centre, Jamat-e-Islami Hind, national president Maulana Jallaluddin Umari who is preparing to launch a nation-wide campaign to build "peace and humanity" made a subtle but strong attack on the ruling dispensation on Friday saying that the govt  has "failed to spread a strong message of peace and harmony to remove the growing sense of insecurity among the minority and the marginalised communities." Umari said the issue of "gau rakshak" was nothing but a ploy to politicise the matter by "divisive forces".Condemning all attacks on people in the name of cow protection, Umari said, "while the PM has himself said that 85% of all those engaging in violence in the name of cow protection are criminals, the impact of his statement has not yet been on ground." He sought action to prevent such attacks. The Jamat's nation-wide "peace and humanity" campaign has been launched in Delhi on Saturday. "The aim is to reach the grassrooots through public meetings and programs," Umari said.In a statement issued by the Jamat-e-Islami Hind asserted that "it is a matter of grave concern that some extremist ideologies propounded by communal and fascist forces are quickly gaining ground in society. Some opportunist elements are trying hard to disrupt our age old social fabric for their own petty political, financial and cultural gains. Many low volume, high intensity incidents of communal violence have been planned and triggered in the recent months. the level of opposition and condemnation expected against this rising communalism was sadly below par which only emboldened the hate mongers." The Jamat has warned that "communal polarisation is very dangerous for a country like India and is a serious impediment in her path to development and prosperity, besides drawing international rebuke and a serious dent to the image of a developed and democratic India."In this backdrop, the Jamat has decided to hold country-wide programs under the "peace and humanity campaign" from August 21 to September 4. "This is by no means a traditional awareness campaign, rather its goal is to bring about some firm and perceptible changes in society. Emphasis will be on people to people contact at ward, neighbourhood and colony level. This will open the channels of inter-community communication and pave the way for removing misconceptions and misunderstanding about each other and bring all to a common platform," Umri explained. The Jamat is hoping to establish a string of community based institutions to consistently counter the menace of communal hatred by way of awareness building.TOI

Gulberg Society massacre: SIT seeks death penalty for 11 who got life term
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/gulberg-society-massacre-sit-seeks-death-penalty-for-11-who-got-life-term-2986279/
Ahmedabad:Supreme Court-appointed SIT has recommended capital punishment for 11 convicts who were awarded life imprisonment in the Gulberg Society massacre case by a special court on June 17 this year.SIT submitted its opinion to the state govt  last week, seeking the govt ’s nod for filing an appeal petition in Gujarat High Court for enhancing the sentence of those convicted, and challenging the acquittal of 14 people. The special court had convicted 24 accused and acquitted 36 people in the case. The SIT has not challenged the acquittal of retired deputy superintendent of police K G Erda, who was also acquitted for want of evidence. On Feb.28, 2002, a mob had broken into the compound of Gulberg Society. The mob killed 69 people, including former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri.According to SIT, the 12 convicts awarded seven-year jail terms and one convict who got a 10-year prison sentence for lesser offences should have been given life imprisonment. The court-appointed probe team has argued that since these 13 people were part of the mob and were found guilty of unlawful assembly and arson, among other charges, they should have been treated as “murderers”. Sources in the SIT said that it will not challenge the acquittal of retired police officer Erda since he was wrongly involved in the case. indian express

Traders and locals have accused the govt of stopping the supply of eatables and petrol in parts of Kashmir, stoking a fresh wave of anger among residents, as curfew, shutdown and restrictions continued to affect normal life for the 41st day on Thursday.Bilal Ahmad, spokesman of the Petrol Dealers Association, Kashmir, alleged that since Wednesday morning Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum and Indian Oil “have stopped distributing fuel to dealers in the Valley.”State Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Choudhary Zulfikar Ali denied any such direction has been issued. “We have not asked oil depot owners to stop supplying fuel.”Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Baseer Khan said the oil dealers’ concern that tankers were coming under attack was being looked into. Contrary to the govt  position, a police party on Thursday raided petrol pumps in the old city. “The police chased vehicle owners at the Mill Stop petrol pump near Nowshera and stopped sale of petrol,” said a local.Besides petrol supplies, locals alleged that in the garb of night curfew the authorities have stopped supply of eatables from villages into the towns and Srinagar city. Locals alleged that movement of eatables, particularly of vegetables and milk, that would move before sunrise were halted by the security forces in north and south Kashmir.Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) chairperson Mohammed Yasin Khan said, “The curfew and blocked supplies is neither Insaaniyat [Humanity] nor Jamhooriyat [democracy] but Yazidiyat (oppressing force). From milk to vegetables to medicines and oil, nothing is being allowed to be sold even in the hours when Hurriyat announces relaxation. By countering the Hurriyat calendar, the govt is only deepening the crises,” Khan said. the hindu

But it is not over yet. While animal rights activists’ feel victorious following the Madras high court order, a section of Muslims who oppose the order are all set to file an appeal soon.Amid the confusion between religious freedom and animal rights, this newspaper spoke to a cross-section of animal activists and religious members.Arun Prasanna, petitioner in the case and an animal rights activist puts forth the laws — Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India — both of which prohibit camel slaughter in the country.According to him, camel population is fast depleting in the country as close to 2.5 lakhs are noted in 2016 against over four lakhs in 2014. Camels are sheltered in a dilapidated condition as there are no camel slaughterhouses in the city. Nose rings are pierced and are pulled to control their temper, he said.Chief Imam of Makkah Masjid, Moulana Shamsudeen Qusami said:“Any animal — buffalo, camel, cow and goat could be slaughtered depending on the regional availability. Camel is not a South Indian animal and transporting it from North India is painful to the animal. I see no point in it as we have other animals.”asianage

I loved the little saying on it," a Trump supporter was quoted as saying.Hamid said she was inside the rally having positive conversations with Trump fans."Those are the reactions I was getting. Taliban captures strategic district of Khanabad in north Afghan amid heavy fighting:Reuters
http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/taliban-captures-startegic-district-in-north-afghan-amid-heavy-fighting/1/744747.html
Kabul:Afghan Taliban captured a strategic district in the northern province of Kunduz today, forcing troops to retreat to the provincial capital which fell briefly to the insurgents last year, officials said.Fighting has sharply escalated in Afghanistan since the insurgency started spreading from its traditional strongholds in the south and east of the country to the once peaceful north. They  seized the district of Khanabad, which connects Kunduz to Takhar and other northern provinces, in the early morning, with heavy fighting ongoing in several other districts, the officials said."Taliban attacked the district from different positions and we resisted for hours but we received no support. The district fell to the Taliban," said Hayatullah Amiri,Khanabad chief.Afghan officials in Kabul say a lack of ammunition and few reinforcements are the main reasons for the district's fall to the Taliban, who are seeking to force NATO-led coalition out of Afghanistan and bring in Islamic law. Fall of Khanabad comes only 5 days after Taliban captured a district in neighbouring Baghlan province, seizing a number of govt  forces' vehicles and ammunition.
