Govt study finds toxins in PET bottles of soft drink brands - Pepsi, Coca Cola, Mountain Dew, Sprite, 7Up
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/toxin-in-pet-bottles-of-soft-drinks-pepsico-coca-cola-mountain-dew-sprite-3067617/
New Delhi: A govt  study has found 5 different toxins — heavy metals antimony, lead, chromium and cadmium and the compound DEHP or Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate — in cold drinks produced by two major multinational companies, PepsiCo and Coca Cola. The study, commissioned by the top Health Ministry body, Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB), found that these toxins leached into 5 cold drink samples picked up for the study — Pepsi, Coca Cola, Mountain Dew, Sprite and 7Up — from the PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles they were in. Mountain Dew and 7Up are owned by Pepsico, while Sprite is owned by Coca Cola. The results of the test, conducted in Feb-March this year, and reviewed by The Indian Express, also show a significant increase in leaching with the rise in room temperature. Under DTAB’s instructions, study was conducted by the Kolkata-based All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (AIIH&PH), which comes under the Health Ministry. According to a source privy to the development, the test results were submitted by AIIH&PH to Jagdish Prasad, DG of Health Services and chairman of DTAB, a few days ago. The institute had last year submitted another set of test results, where it had found heavy metals in various medicines packaged in PET bottles.Coca Cola India declined to respond.  According to the WHO, children are particularly vulnerable to harmful effects of lead. “Lead can have serious consequences for the health of children. At high levels of exposure, Lead attacks the brain and central nervous system to cause coma, convulsions and even death. Children who survive severe lead poisoning may be left with mental retardation and behavioural disorders,” WHO has noted. For cadmium, WHO said, “Cadmium exerts toxic effects on the kidney, the skeletal system and the respiratory system and is classified as a human carcinogen.” Chromium, antimony and DEHP are also known to cause serious side effects on the body. In April 2015, Jagdish Prasad is learnt to have directed the AIIH&PH to conduct a study on leaching of toxins from PET bottles, used for packaging pharmaceutical preparations, cold drinks, alcohol, juices and other beverages.indian express

New Delhi: Modi govt, as part of its de-radicalisation initiatives, will organise a Sufi conclave comprising regional scholars to invoke moderate ideology in the run up to the Heart of Asia Conference on Afghanistan, to be held in Amritsar in early Dec. Minister for External Affairs MJ Akbar made the announcement on the conclave at a Brussels conference on Afghanistan. Referring to the shared Sufi heritage of India-Afghanistan-Pakistan, Akbar said:“This harmony of outlook and philosophy led to the unique humanitarian vision of Sufi Islam, which still connects the most revered Sufi shrines at Ajmer in my country with Mazar and Chisht-e-Sharif in Afghanistan and Mashhad in Iran.It is because of this organic link that the poetry of Bedil and Rumi is as revered in India as it is in Afghanistan or Iran.”

Salman Khurshid: ‘Is tit for tat enough? Is there a plan? You can’t kill conversation in the country’
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/surgical-strikes-debate-salman-khurshid-answer-public-3067308/
While India’s self-esteem got a boost, questions will continue until the govt satisfies public curiosity. Defending Congress’s decision to reveal details of the Army actions carried out under UPA govt, he recounts how AB Vajpayee supported the then Narasimha Rao govt on countering a Pakistan-backed resolution at UNHRC. Responding to a question on the surgical strikes Salman said, "Nobody is questioning the strikes. There are people in our party who have active minds, and they are saying we need to know more. There are questions being raised here, in Pakistan etc. Why are these questions being raised? If the purpose of the strikes is told, there would be no further discussion. But the purpose is not being told. We have to work out the purpose for ourselves. Tit for tat? But is tit for tat enough? When Israel attacks some place, say nuclear facilities in Iran, they do it with a definite objective, that we will delay the nuclear programme by 4 years etc. So is there a plan?Like 5 strikes, and we will be in a much more comfortable position… Since the govt has not spoken about any clear plan, there are some people who are asking questions… You can’t give operational details, but you can give more information than has been given. If people are asking, either explain to them why it can’t be given and should not be given, or satisfy them in any other manner… you can’t kill conversation within the country."  indian express

Surgical strikes: Pakistan now plans to take Indian scribes to 'targeted' sites: catchnews

Days after taking foreign journalists on a guided tour of villages along the LoC where the Indian army reportedly carried out surgical strikes last week, Pakistan may up the ante by taking Indian journalists to these areas.Any offer of a tour to Indian journalists by Pakistan may complicate things for the Modi regime, which is debating whether releasing footage of the operation would settle the dust. While security establishment is reportedly considering releasing at least part of the footage, the diplomatic establishment is against the idea. There are concerns that releasing the footage could actually lead to more questions than it would answer, hence more confusion about the operation.Already, reports in the domestic and the international press - the former mostly supporting the Indian govt's claims and the latter raising questions - have muddied the waters. Sources told Catch that discussions were going on within the govt on whether the footage of the strikes, which was reportedly captured by cameras mounted on the helmets of Para commandos as well as a drone, should be released to satisfy those questioning the veracity of the operation. Home ministry has claimed it has already received the footage from the army. Those opposed to releasing the footage, the sources said, are arguing that it could further complicate the matters for the govt. Once footage is out, it could find its way to various forensic labs in India and abroad, which would try to dissect it and spice it with their own findings. Catch news

New Delhi: Pakistan Army chief General Raheel Sharif on Thursday sought to portray India’s surgical strikes against terrorists along the LoC as a “distortion of facts”, saying any aggression would not “go unpunished”. Sharif used a passing out parade at the air force academy in Risalpur to speak on last week’s surgical strikes that the Indian Army said caused significant casualties. This was the first time he has publicly spoken on the issue.“We have recently witnessed an unfortunate display of utter desperation playing out inside Occupied Kashmir and along LoC through a litany of falsehoods and distortion of facts by India,” Sharif said.“Any aggression, born out of deliberate intent or even a strategic miscalculation, will not be allowed to go unpunished and will be met with the most befitting response. We will be highly relentless in defending our motherland against entire spectrum of threat,” he said, according to a statement from the military. Sharif’s remarks came against the backdrop of a report in the Pakistani media that the civilian govt of PM  Nawaz Sharif had delivered a “blunt” warning to the military that Pakistan faced international isolation on the issue of terrorism. Stop promoting RSS at the cost of Chenab Valley's peace: NC leader Devender Singh

"This is for the first time that such an activity has been allowed in the town by the administration, ignoring the sensitivities involved," he said.Rana alleged that the administration had become "a tool in the hands of BJP", which was "furthering the agenda of the RSS openly and brazenly". The permission for the march by lathi-wielding swayamsevaks in Khaki shorts was bereft of "administrative wisdom" and this kind of a "provocation" could have serious ramifications across the region, he warned.DNA

Govt probe report alleges Vemula’s mother faked Dalit status, blames him for his suicide
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/rohith-vemula-dalit-hyderabad-university-suicide-mother-fake-dalit-probe-hrd-3067682/
New Delhi:Rohith Vemula’s mother “branded” herself as Dalit to avail the benefits of reservation ; expelling him from the hostel was the “most reasonable” decision the university could have taken; personal frustration, not discrimination, drove 26-year-old PhD scholar to suicide; Union Ministers Bandaru Dattatreya and Smriti Irani were only discharging their duties and there was no pressure on the Hyderabad Central University authorities. These are the salient conclusions of the inquiry conducted by the one-man judicial commission set up by the HRD Ministry on Jan.28 this year, 11 days after Vemula killed himself in his hostel room. Its 41-page report was submitted by ex Allahabad High Court judge AK Roopanwal in Aug. When asked him about his conclusions, Roopanwal said he did not wish to comment on the contents of the report. In an earlier report, Rohith’s brother Raja had rejected this conclusion. He had said:“We lived like Dalits. We were raised in a Dalit community. Yes, my father is from a backward class, but whatever we know is from our experience of living like a Dalit.” indian express

Posters discouraging triple talaq spring up in Mumbai mosques: TOI Report
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Posters-discouraging-triple-talaq-spring-up-in-Mumbai-mosques/articleshow/54710949.cms
Mumbai: For the first time, posters denouncing triple talaq and warning husbands who resort to this practice to divorce their wives, have come up in about a dozen mosques in the heart of Mumbai's old Muslim area. Social worker Abdul Razzak Maniyar, who runs the Public Complaint Centre in Pydhonie, has put them up, with the title: Triple talaq on the phone to the mother of his child; Public Complaint Centre got Rs 7 lakh for the wife; a warning to those who give triple talaq."Maniyar, who has been resolving marital disputes at the Centre with the help of lawyers since 1985, decided to put this poster up for the first time, to create awareness that this not the right way to divorce, he says. "Some men think if they say talaq over the phone, it won't amount to one; while others feel this is the only way to divorce," he says. The poster asks men who want to divorce their wives to first find out the proper Islamic way of pronouncing talaq. But the real urgency behind putting it up is what the poster describes as the "Supreme Court sword hanging over Muslim Personal Law."The reference is to the case currently on in the SC, wherein 3 divorced women have asked for a ban on triple talaq. The poster refers to these women as "RSS inspired". Poster says that all 4 schools of Islamic thought uphold this method of unilateral instant triple talaq, which is destroying the lives of Muslim women. If we want to protect the Sharia, says the poster, we have to prevent these women from "falling into the clutches of Islam's enemies (read RSS), by helping them get their rights."Maniyar says Muslims have appreciated the poster, feeling this kind of awareness raising measure was necessary. Bajrang Dal men sprinkle gau mutra on garba participants to "purify" non-Hindus  in Gandhinagar; some slam it

Ahmedabadl:Bajrang Dal activists have begun a drive to "purify" non-Hindus at garba venues in Gandhinagar by sprinkling cow urine on them. They think it is the "perfect way" to keep non-Hindus away from the revelry. However, the average Gujarati clearly does not welcome the move as was evident from the reactions of revellers at this particular venue at Gandhinagar's Sector 11. 25 Bajrang Dal members, with support from VHP, executed their novel idea of purifying all revellers entering a private venue at Sector 11 in the capital by sprinkling gau mutra on them. The stench was unignorable, but some walked in without protest while others like Devdattsinh Raol refused to give in and called the cops. Raol, 35, IT professional, called the cops after the Bajrang Dal members before they could sprinkle gau mutra on him. He did not even let them apply a tilak on his forehead. "They threatened to throw me out of the venue if I did not allow them to go ahead with what they planned to do. Who are they to not allow me entry when I have bought my passes?" "This is ridiculous. Most people do not like this but they allow it out of fear. Sprinkling the gau mutra on a person violates all limits of his tolerance. I don't think I need to prove to anyone that I am a Hindu," he added. His wife Jainikaba, equally furious.TOI

New Delhi: In a relief to Saquib Nachan, ex-chief of the banned SIMI who is booked under the MCOCA by Maharashtra police in 2012, the Supreme Court, on Tuesday, paved the way clear for him to seek bail before the Special Court as the police failed to file the charge sheet against him within the stipulated time of 90 days.SC quashed the Bombay High Court order which had stayed the special MCOCA court's order rejecting the probe agency's plea seeking more time to file the charge sheet against Nachan.A bench headed by Justice AK Sikri allowed him to file his bail plea before the trial court which will consider his request. Soon after the top court order, Nachan's counsel Mehmood Pracha told DNA that after Nachan completed the formalities before the trial court, he will be out from jail."Now mere formalities are left before the Special MCOCA court in Thane. This is the case in which he was in the jail. In other cases, he is either acquitted by the court or on bail," Pracha said."Nachan has been in jail for more than 8 years for the POTA case. Although he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years under the Arms Act, he has nearly completed the jail term. He will be released on bail soon," the lawyer said.DNA
Is Bihar's Munger becoming a hub for illegal arms trafficking and international terrorism?

On Tuesday the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime chief of Bangladesh, Monirul Islam, reportedly said that modification of arms used to carry out the July Dhaka attack was done in Munger city in Indian state of Bihar. The statement has yet again put Munger on radar of Indian based security agencies and police forces who were, just days before the Dhaka terror attack, in talks to set up a joint task force to counter illegal arms traffickers who were using Munger as a base to modify weapons. DNA on June 22 had reported that cadres of CPI (Maoist) operating in Jharkhand have been supplied with sophisticated M-16 rifles. The probe agency, in the last week of June, initiated talks with ATS and STF of Nagaland, Punjab, UP, Bihar and Jharkhand to chalk out a strategy from stopping the highly-sophisticated weaponry from reaching cadres of CPI(Maoist) operating in Jharkhand. Official sources in NIA had told dna that Munger in Bihar has been somewhat becoming an important transit point owing to its existing illegal arms markets.DNA

UK’s terror law watchdog has said Muslim communities see the govt ’s anti-extremism strategy as a “spying programme” and called for it to be overhauled.David Anderson QC claimed many people believe the programme targeted the “practice of Islam” as opposed to the spread of radical beliefs. He urged ministers to conduct an independent review of the scheme, which is designed to help officials spot individuals who are becoming radicalised.Anderson said: “There is a strong feeling in Muslim communities that I visit, that Prevent is, if not a spying programme, at least a programme that is targeted on them.“In some cases, it is even felt it is targeted not just at Islamist terrorism or extremism, but at the practice of Islam. People who pray or who wear the veil, for example, are sometimes felt to be under suspicion.” Independent UK
