Srinagar: Protests erupted amid a shutdown call by separatists in the Kashmir Valley on Friday against the alleged move to grant domicile certificate to West Pakistan refugees in J&K. JKLF chief Yasin Malik was detained when he tried to take out a march in Srinagar. “Kashmiris will not shy away from spilling even their blood to safeguard the Muslim majority character of J&K. The Supreme Court orders regarding the quasi-sovereign status of J&K and permitting outside banks to confiscate and hold properties in it is part of the conspiracy to change the demography,” alleged Malik.Speaking at Jamia Masjid before the Friday prayers, Hurriyat faction chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said, “Our peaceful programme against the anti-Kashmir policies of granting domicile rights to WP refugees and using the judiciary to subvert the Kashmir dispute was thwarted by the police.”West Pakistan refugees issue sparked fresh street protests in the Valley. There were clashes in parts of Sopore, Srinagar and Bandipora districts among others. On Thursday, Govt  spokesman and State Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar ruled out granting any citizenship to WP refugees in J&K, saying “only identification certificates were issued.”CPI(M) leader Yousuf Tarigami warned against “violating and eroding the special status of J&K”. thehindu

New Delhi: Amid snowballing row, Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh today defended the decision of J&K govt to issue domicile certificates to West Pakistan refugees and slammed those opposing the move to address the matter which has been lingering for 70 years.Singh, BJP leader from Jammu, said the country owes it to them since they have been living in the state for last 70 years and have been languishing without jobs and proper livelihood since Independence. Kashmiri separatists have criticized the move by J&K govt to give domicile certificates to West Pakistan refugees, saying it was an attempt to change the demography of the state. “This has absolutely nothing to do with citizenship right per se…those who are trying to make an issue out of it or oppose this should first address the issue of some foreign nationals who have settled down in the suburbs of Jammu,” he said.PTI

AIMPLB has turned into ‘male personal law board’: MJ Akbar

Kolkata:Targeting the All India Muslim Personal Law Board over the issue of ‘triple talaq’, Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar Saturday accused the organisation of turning itself into a “male personal law board which is only interested in oppressing women”.“Islam calls for gender equality and not gender oppression. Islam has never called for oppressing women.Muslim Personal Law Board has turned into male personal law board,” Akbar said while addressing a programme in Kolkata. On the last month’s convention of AIMPLB supporting ‘triple talaq’ which was attended by a large number of people, Akbar said, “Huge gathering always doesn’t signify truth.”Calling for removal of ‘triple talaq’ as it is against humanity, Akbar said, “Sometimes a marriage doesn’t work so there is a clause of divorce. But while marrying in Muslim community you need the permission of the women. Then why during divorce (talaq), only a man will dictate terms and by spelling the word ‘talaq’ three times (it can be obtained).” Akbar noted that if the country has to move forward and if the economy has to grow, we need to take the women along.PTI
We are just a counselling centre, not a kangaroo court: Mosque caretaker on Madras HC verdict on Sharia courts
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/not-about-law-but-gender-justice-struggle-against-sharia-courts-in-tamil-nadu/story-whyC3za0SDxyhKUWlmtIWM.html
Chennai:Sharia courts have once again come under the scanner after the Madras high court this week banned all unauthorised courts in mosques across Tamil Nadu, in response to a petition filed by a NRI Abdur Rahman. What is known is that practitioners of Islam frequently go to these courts for advice and counsel, usually in matters of matrimonial disputes or property issues. Makkah Masjid, located on bustling Anna Salai, denies all allegations of wrongdoing.“We are just a counselling centre. When members of our community run into marriage problems or property disputes they come here for advice. We are definitely not a kangaroo court,”Hazir Mohammed, caretaker of the mosque, says.“This is our Shariah council,”Mohammed continues, pointing to a small room. Bare except for a few chairs and a long desk, council is comprised of the imam and his deputy, a woman’s rights activist, and even an advocate from the high court. “Abdur Rahman has made this into an issue by taking it to the court because the council advised his wife to divorce him. This is another false accusation and we will plan how best to respond to it,”Mohammed says. R Rajaramani, advocate representing Abdur Rahman, however said, "In the case of my client, the council passed judgement hours after they heard from both him and his wife - which is a violation of the guidelines laid down by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which says there has to be at least a 3 month gap between hearing and fatwa,” he adds. It began in April 2014. The Economist posed the question: Can anyone stop Narendra Modi? They had the answer too: “He will probably become India’s next PM. That does not mean he should be”.The article was written based on his stint as CM  of the Gujarat that saw one of the worst pogroms in India and 'nurturing of anti-Muslim votes'.He became the PM , and mid-way into his tenure articles lambasting his financial daredevilry – demonetisation – have become regular across the pages of influential publications such as The Wall Street Journal and Forbes magazine. In its leader comment, Forbes CEO and editor-in-chief Steve Forbes headlined the move as 'Sickening and Immoral'.Forbes said in the latest issue: “India's govt  perpetrated an unprecedented act that is not only damaging its economy and threatening destitution to countless millions of its already poor citizens but also breathtaking in its immorality.”What India has done is commit a massive theft of people's property without even the pretense of due process--a shocking move for a democratically elected govt. (One expects such things in places like Venezuela.)” Wall Street Journal, the largest newspaper in the United States by circulation, termed demonetisation as 'India’s Bizarre War on Cash'.The latest was a Reuters article on how the Modi govt  had allegedly lobbied for an upgrade of Moody's credit rating. outlookindia

UNSC urges end to Israeli settlements: aljazeera
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/12/passes-resolution-israeli-settlements-161223192709807.html
UNSC has voted in favour of a resolution demanding the halt of settlement activity by Israel on occupied Palestinian territory with the US notably abstaining. The resolution was put forward at the 15-member council for a vote on Friday by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal a day after Egypt withdrew it under pressure from Israel and US president-elect Donald Trump.Israel and Trump had called on the US to veto the measure."This is a day of victory for international law, a victory for civilised language and negotiation and a total rejection of extremist forces in Israel," chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said."The international community has told the people of Israel that the way to security and peace is not going to be done through occupation ... but rather through peace, ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state to live side by side with the state of Israel on 1967 line," Erekat said. The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favour to a resounding round of applause. It is the first resolution the Security Council has adopted on Israel and the Palestinians in nearly eight years.US' abstention was the biggest rebuke in recent history to longstanding ally Israel, allowing the Security Council to condemn its settlements and continuing construction in Palestinian territory as a "flagrant violation" of international law.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/12/egypt-trump-sisi-resolution-israel-settlements-161223064418355.html
Egypt agreed to postpone a vote on a UNSC resolution against Israeli settlements after US President-elect Donald Trump called President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Egyptian president's office said. Egypt had circulated the draft late on Wednesday, demanding Israel halt settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, and a vote was initially scheduled for Thursday. But it requested that the resolution be postponed after Israel launched a frantic lobbying effort, including calls from Israeli PM  Benjamin Netanyahu for the US to use its veto power at the Security Council to block the resolution. On Friday, Sisi's spokesman said the 2 leaders agreed to allow Trump's incoming administration a chance to tackle the issue. aljazeera
