Congress, AAP demand probe after VVPAT dispenses only BJP slips during EVM demo in MP; EC seeks report
http://www.indiatvnews.com/politics/national-congress-aap-demand-probe-after-vvpat-dispenses-only-bjp-slips-during-evm-demo-in-mp-ec-seeks-report-375123
Opposition demand to scarp Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) during polls intensified today with AAP and the Congress both approaching the Election Commission of India (EC) seeking investigation into alleged cases of EVM tampering. A Congress delegation met Election Commission and sought an investigation into a case in MP where an EVM -- during a demonstration to media -- printed slips of the BJP no matter which button was pressed.VVPAT-enabled machines would be used at Assembly by-elections at Ater in Bhind district and Bandhavgarh in Umaria district on 9 April.Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal urged the Election Commission to investigate cases of faulty EVMs to ascertain if they were tampered with to favour the BJP in recent elections.Kejriwal said Friday's case in MP's Bhind was not an isolated incident. He also demanded that paper trail of votes be re-implemented for all elections in the country."I have been repeatedly saying that these machines are being tampered with at a very large scale. Similar machines also surfaced in Assam and Delhi Cantonment where no matter which party you vote for, the vote only goes to BJP," he said.He asked why was it that every defective machine favoured the BJP and not any other political party."It means these machines are being tampered with and their software have been changed." Kejriwal said that while the EC says that the chips of the EVMs can't be written on, "but it clearly doesn't seem to be the case".He added that before the elections, the Election Commission conducts demo of 20-25 machines but if any machine is found to be defective, they just change that machine but don't order any inquiry."Just in Delhi (civic polls), 12,000 machines going to be used. They all can't be checked. If one machine is found to be defective, it raises questions on the others too," he said."It raises question if people are casting their votes or if machines are doing it," he asked.Kejriwal said in all three incidents where the defective machines were found, the EC did not issue an inquiry if they were tampered with."I have demanded that a technical investigation into all these incidents be conducted so it could be found if the machines were tampered with, and if so, who was responsible," he said."Otherwise, no matter who people vote for, only lotus would bloom from the 'keechad' of EVMs," he added, in a reference to the lotus symbol of the BJP. Congress today alleged that an EVM malfunctioned during an official media demonstration ahead of an assembly byelection and demanded a probe into the incident.  Election Commission has sought a detailed report from the district poll authorities in Bhind, MP on media reports that VVPAT was only dispensing slips of BJP symbol during a demonstration exercise.indiatvnews

Indian abattoirs end strike on assurances of no Hindu party crackdown:Reuters
http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-indian-abattoirs-end-strike-on-assurances-of-no-hindu-party-crackdown-2376273
Abattoirs and meat sellers across India called off a 4-day strike on Friday after the state govt  of UP, the most populous state, gave assurances that mainly Muslim-run, unlicensed slaughter houses would not be shut down or attacked. There had been fears that demands by right-wing Hindu groups to stop the slaughter of cows, considered holy in Hinduism, could stoke communal tensions with Muslims, who dominate the meat industry and make up 14 % of India's 1.3 billion people. "We have decided to call off the strike after a meeting with the CM , who assured us that the state govt  will renew the licences of slaughter houses," Chaudhary Aley Ummar Qureshi, a general secretary of the Muslim All India Jamiatul Quresh, told Reuters from Lucknow, the state capital."Govt  also assured us of protection from any arbitrary or unlawful crackdown."Traders will resume selling meat after the 9-day festival of Navratra, when Hindu devotees fast and stay away from meat, ends on Wednesday, Qureshi said.

New Delhi: In the wake of newly-appointed UP  CM  Yogi Adityanath's bid to clamp down on illegal slaughterhouses, several states, including as many as 5 BJP-ruled states have followed in for the closure of illegal abattoirs across the country. Even as the Jharkhand Govt  earlier last week issued an order for closure of all illegal slaughterhouses in the state within 72 hours, Gujarat State Assembly on Friday amended its Cow Protection Law introducing a life term for those slaughtering the animal.7 illegal slaughterhouses were sealed in Bihar's Rohtas district after the Patna High Court directed them be sealed within six weeks.Various cow protection organisations from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have also started demanding for the closure of various meat shops in the respective states. In Karnataka too, the Gau Samrakshana Prakoshta and Karnataka Federation of Gaushaalas reportedly have demanded 1,700 meat shops in city be closed down as they are unauthorised. The Jharkhand govt 's decision came close on the heels of a demand by right wing organisations including the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), the Bajrang Dal and the Jharkhand Gau Raksha Dal, for a blanket ban on slaughter houses.ANI

Slaughterhouse ban to hit leather goods industry, hit exports
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/slaughterhouse-ban-to-hit-leather-goods-industry-hit-exports-4594967/
Kolkata:Leather goods manufacturers, who have experienced a slump in raw material supply from domestic sources, fear that BJP-led UP  govt’s action against illegal slaughterhouses could hit supplies and raise prices. They also say a “blanket ban” on slaughterhouses could defeat the purpose of the Make in India programme for the $12 billion Indian leather industry, which is among the top five in the world’s leather market. In case of short supply of raw materials from the indigenous market, manufacturers need to look for costly imports of raw materials instead of cheap domestic sourcing which would make Indian leather exports less competitive in the world market.“The crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses by the UP  govt  cannot be questioned, but a blanket ban will affect the domestic supply of raw material. Since illegal units were in the supply chain, some amount of short supply is expected,” Tapan Nandi, Convenor Chairman for German Investment in India of the Council of Leather Export, said. IANS

10 days after Chief Justice of India JS Khehar brought the contentious Ayodhya Ram Mandir case with a suggestion for 'out-of-court settlement', the matter is all set to go back to cold storage. On Friday, the CJI temporarily withdrew all proposals for mediation and suggestion for negotiation amongst parties after learning that BJP MP Subramanian Swamy was not a party to the case and had no 'locus standi'. The Supreme Court said it was under the wrong impression that he was a party to the case and not an intervenor and had even given him the onus of initiating talks amongst all parties - Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and Ramjanmbhoomi Nyas - for settlement. When Swamy said he only wanted a speedy hearing of the Ramjanmbhoomi issue, CJI shot back: 'Sorry we do not have time right now.' When Swamy asked if the bench is giving him liberty to come back again, CJI Khehar said: 'We are not saying anything. Do whatever you want.' The court said it had learnt from the press that Swamy was not a petitioner in the title suits. Daily mail

The new regulation, which will come to force from today, will dissuade women, who fully cover their faces and bodies, from entering the airports, railway stations and other public places and report about them to police.Apart from this, they also prohibit the abnormal growing of beards and it would be forbidden to reject or refuse radio, television and other public facilities and services. The regulation restrains marrying using religious not legal procedures and using the name of Halal to meddle in the secular life of others. The document also bans not allowing children to attend regular school, not abiding by family planning policies and deliberately damaging legal documents.ANI
