INDIA: Erdogan’s visit
Erdogan’s India visit: Turkey contradicts India’s stand, favours multilateral dialogue on Kashmir
http://www.jantakareporter.com/india/erdogan-kashmir/120297/
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan today assured India of his country’s full support in the fight against terrorism as he held “extensive” discussion on this evolving threat with PM  Narendra Modi, who described it as a “shared worry”. Holding that “no intent or goal or reason or rationale can validate terrorism”, Modi, at a joint press event with Erdogan, said the two sides have decided to work together to deepen cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally, to effectively counter this menace. In an obvious reference to Pakistan-based terror groups, Modi said countries across the world need to “work as one to disrupt the terrorist networks and their financing and put a stop to cross-border movement of terrorists”.They also need to stand and act against those that conceive and create, support and sustain, shelter and spread these instruments and ideologies of violence, PM  added.  Erdogan said, “Turkey will always be by the side of India in full solidarity while battling terrorism… And terrorists will be drowned in the blood they shed.”Ahead of his visit to India, Erdogan had pitched for a multilateral dialogue to resolve the Kashmir issue to ensure peace in the region.“We should not allow more casualties to occur (in Kashmir).By having a multilateral dialogue, (in which) we can be involved, we can seek ways to settle the issue once and for all,” he had told a TV channel in an interview. The remarks are contrary to the position of India, which maintains that the J&K  issue is a bilateral matter between it and Pakistan, and that there is no scope for a third party mediation.Modi and the visiting dignitary had comprehensive discussion and took stock of full range of bilateral relations, including political and economic. 2 leaders, who addressed a India-Turkey business forum earlier in the day, also pitched for enhanced trade and business ties. Observing that India and Turkey are two large economies which present an enormous opportunity to expand and deepen commercial linkages, Modi said at the level of the two Govt s, there is a need to approach the entire landscape of business opportunities in a strategic and long-term manner.“Our bilateral trade turnover of around 6 billion dollars does not do full justice to convergences in our economies.Erdogan also emphasised the need to increase bilateral trade to at least USD 10 billion, as soon as possible, and added that the countries will look at ways to expand cooperation in the energy and infrastructure sectors, in particular. After Modi-Erdogan meet, 2 sides exchanged 3 pacts, including one between their telecom authorities. In his media statement, Modi also referred to Rumi and Sufi tradition in India. Erdogan supports permanent UNSC seat for India
http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2017/may/01/turkey-president-erdogan-supports-permanent-unsc-seat-for-india-1599900.html
New Delhi: Tayyip Erdogan today called for reforms in the United Nations Security Council as he supported India's bid for a permanent seat in the exclusive body. "India, with a population of 1.3 billion is not a part of the UNSC. Over 1.7 billion people live in Islamic world but they too are not a part of the UNSC. This is not a healthy sign," Erdogan said here.He said one cannot expect the UN SC to dispense justice without more representation. The membership in the body should be on a rotational basis with 20 to 30 countries holding the mantle at a time, he said.Erdogan, who is on a two-day visit to India, was speaking at Jamia Millia Islamia University where he was awarded a Doctor of Letters degree.PTI

http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-telangana-police-encouraging-muslim-youths-to-join-isis-alleges-congress-leader-digvijaya-singh-2423632
Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday sparked a controversy after he alleged that Telangana police were encouraging Muslim youths to join ISIS.Singh who was on Saturday removed as office bearers in-charge of Congress units in Goa and Karnataka after party's poor performance, levelled the allegations in a series of tweets.Taking to micro-blogging site, Singh said, "Telangana police has set up a bogus ISIS site which is radicalising Muslim Youths and encouraging them to become ISIS Modules.""It was on their (Telangana Police) information that MP Police arrested accused who were responsible for the bomb blast in train in Shajapur District of MP. It also resulted in Saifullaha encounter in Kanpur the same day," Singh said in another tweets.Further questioning if it was ethical and moral, Singh asked, "Has KCR authorised Telangana Police to trap Muslim Youths and encourage them to join ISIS?"Singh also questioned if the CM  had authorised then shouldn't he own the responsibility and resign? "If he hasn't then shouldn't he enquire and punish those who are responsible for committing such a heinous crime?" Congress leader added. More than a week ago, UP ATS had busted a module with ISIS links, arresting 3 suspects. The arrests were made after the UP ATS conducted raids in a joint operation with the special cell of Delhi police, Maharashtra ATS, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab Police. Around 80 people suspected to have been influenced by the ISIS ideology have been held across the country recently, but no input suggests that the radical organisation has established a base in India, the Govt  had informed the Rajya Sabha in April.DNA

Debate on triple talaq unnecessary: Sayed Jalaluddin Umri
 http://www.financialexpress.com/india-news/debate-on-triple-talaq-unnecessary-sayed-jalaluddin-umri/648378/
Patna:Jamaat-e-Islami Hind chief and All India Muslim Personal Law Board vice-president Sayed Jalaluddin Umri today said the nationwide debate on the triple talaq issue was “unnecessary” and there will be no dispute if Muslims follow the Sharia law. “There will be no dispute or discord if Muslims follow the Sharia law in true spirit with regard to the issues of marriage, divorce, inheritance, Mehar (right of a wife) and Nafqa (monthly stipend). The debate is unnecessary,” he said.
The muslim personal law is “balanced and justified” and it helps and promotes healthy family traditions, the Jamat chief told reporters here. It not only gives respect and freedom to women but also protects their dignity and rights, Umri said. Jamaat has set up 11 counselling centres and a helpine in Bihar to provide advice to Muslims with regard to marital problems. “Jamaat has set up a helpline 0612-2370863 and also set up 11 counselling centres in Bihar, including in Patna to provide counselling to the people with regard to all types of marital and other related problems,” he said. The centres will provide counselling to Muslim couples before marriage to make them aware about the Islamic laws on marital life, about provisions of muslim personal laws and related issues. As part of the counselling programme, Jamaat’s volunteers and members will tell couples about the rights and duties of men and women and how to lead a marital life as per the Sharia law so that they can find solution as per it if problems arise, the Jamaat chief said. Umri, who was accompanied by Jamaat’s Bihar chief Nayyaruzzma, was here as part of the awareness campaign on the muslim personal law. The campaign was launched on April 23 and will come to an end on May 7 and workshops are being held as part of it. PTI
If govt is worried about women, it must think about female beggars in Varanasi, Mathura: AIMPLB
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bareilly/if-govt-is-worried-about-women-it-must-think-about-female-beggars-in-varanasi-mathura-aimplb/articleshow/58449585.cms
Bareilly: Taking a dig at the BJP for highlighting the troubles faced by Muslim women due to triple talaq, an All India Muslim personal law board (AIMPLB) member on Sunday claimed that the Govt  was talking about the practice because of political vested interests.AIMPLB secretary Zafar Yab Jilani said a majority of divorce and family dispute cases are reported from other communities, whereas only 20% of such cases from the Muslim community are filed in courts. "Only 20% of divorce cases are filed by Muslims. The remaining 80% are registered by other communities. If the Govt is really concerned about women, it should think about the women begging in Varanasi and Mathura," he said. Speaking on the sidelines of an awareness campaign organized by Jamat-e-Islami Hind on Muslim Personal Law, Jilani took potshots at BJP and said that the saffron party is making a political issue out of triple talaq when it is merely a provision in Islam which is rarely misused. Other speakers at the event also expressed their anguish over the Govt  highlighting the controversial practice, claiming that it was an attempt by BJP to divert attention from issues like unemployment, education and poverty. "The issue of a Uniform Civil Code is repeatedly raised to misguide and instigate the Muslim community. Till date, the Govt  has not been able to even prepare a draft resolution on the uniform code which it plans to implement in the near future," Jamaat-e-Hind general secretary Mohammed Saleem said. timesofindia
Deal with triple talaq as reform measure: Naqvi
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/deal-with-triple-talaq-as-reform-measure-mukhtar-abbas-naqvi/articleshow/58453689.cms
New Delhi: Centre will make all attempts to convince the Muslim community that the triple talaq issue needs to be viewed as a “reform measure” and not part of any political agenda, minority affairs minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said.“It is best that the reform comes from the community itself. We have had informal sessions with many groups from the community,” Naqvi told ET on Sunday. The emphasis was on asserting that the Govt  wanted to bring reforms and justice in the lives of women, he said. Triple talaq system gives a man the right to divorce his wife by just announcing it to her, without citing any justification or court approval.Senior officials in the Govt  said the Centre had been making attempts to reach out the Muslim community, bodies and NGOs that work in the area of justice, religious minorities and those that work with women. Many of these organisations have sought to consult AIMPLB that has asserted that it has “constitutional” right to implement Muslim personal law. “To start with, we have reached out to liberal Muslim intellectuals, women’s organisations, and have asked them to reach out to as many people as possible,” a Govt  official said. The line explained in the meetings was that Muslims in India needed to “show the path of modernity” to everyone else in the world, he said.Kamal Faruqui of AIMPLB, however, said the board had written to the Centre seeking to put forward its point of view but was yet to get a reply. “We have been advising Muslim men that divorce should be the last option.Triple talaq should not even be considered. These efforts should be acknowledged and it should be noted that the divorce rate in community is low compared to others.” ET/TOI

Women's Association demands equal rights for all women, not just Muslim

Lucknow: Targeting the BJP led central and state Govt s for malice on siding with the triple talaq issue as emancipation of Muslim women, All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) on Sunday said it would hold a mass public protest across UP in May to remind BJP of its manifesto promises and for cognizance of all women issues sans religion. Until Sept, AIDWA will hold campaigns every month starting from rollback of 'meat bandi' before Ramzan, on the status of toilets built under Swachh Bharat, inclusion of the women's share in agricultural land under UP's Land Reform Act and a convention on all women's issues.Holding its state wide three day meet in Lucknow with representatives from 14 districts that ended on Sunday, AIDWA claimed that there are around 17,000 cases pending in Lucknow's family court. Of these, they said, almost 3,500 cases have been due since the past 10 years. "Around 85% of these cases pertain to Hindu women. A number of Hindu women, even without divorce are not allowed to live with their husbands. The percentage of divorce in Hindus is also higher at 0.69% than in Muslims which is at 0.67%. Govt should look at women issues as a whole," said Sudha Sundararaman, national vice-president, AIDWA."On one hand, the Govt is acting to be sensitive for the Muslim women, and on the other hand, it has attacked their choice of staple food in the form of an unsaid meat bandi," added Madhu Garg, state president, AIDWA. Garg claimed that the thousands of Muslim women that AIDWA members met in the last few months across cities and villages were full of angst on the issues of triple talaq and meat shortage.TOI
BJP's intervention in triple talaq is tokenism, 'selective justice is not acceptable', says Owaisi
http://www.firstpost.com/india/bjps-intervention-in-triple-talaq-is-tokenism-selective-justice-is-not-acceptable-says-owaisi-3417202.html
Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said that BJP wants to keep the communal pot boiling in the country through its remarks on triple talaq.Talking to reporters, he said it was inappropriate on the part of PM Narendra Modi, his Cabinet colleagues and others to speak on triple talaq when the Supreme Court was set to hear the case from May 11.Reacting to Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu's comments on Sharia, the MIM chief pointed out that a day after the prime minister asserted the issue should not be politicised, the central minister spoke about it.The Hyderabad MP also referred to the statement by Yogi Adityanath that people should speak on triple talaq and to the remark by a Uttar Pradesh minister that Muslims use triple talaq for lust.He said that if the BJP leaders had anything to say on the issue, they should say it in the Supreme Court, which was hearing the matter.Owaisi remarked that Venkaiah Naidu was new expert in the country on Sharia."I would like to request Venkaiah Naidu to explain to us what is Sharia," he said, adding that "Muslims know what is in Sharia"."Some 1,400 years ago, Islam gave women the share in father's property. Can you give us any such example," he asked. On the BJP leaders' argument that they were speaking for justice to Muslim women, Owaisi said such "selective justice" was not acceptable."Why don't they talk about justice to the blind mother of Pilo Khan, who was killed for carrying a cow, or justice to the mother and wife of Akhlaq, or justice to the mother of Najeeb and to Zakia Jafari," he asked.Owaisi also wanted to know why the BJP leaders were silent on the need for justice to 20 lakh Hindu sisters, who were separated or abandoned."There are 4.30crore women who are widows. Why don't they speak about it or do something for their re-marriage?"IANS

http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-if-shariat-is-influencing-bjp-leaders-they-should-consider-joining-it-azam-khan-on-triple-talaq-debate-2423415
Lashing out at Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and the BJP opinion on abolishing the triple talaq norm among the Muslims, the Samajwadi Party asserted that the former should consider joining the Shariat, since it has been 'influential' to them. Speaking to ANI here on Sunday, SP leader Azam Khan said that rather than focusing on this matter, the BJP should consider addressing other issues.'BJP leaders are expressing their hidden desires. If Shariat is influencing them so much, they should consider joining it,' he said, adding BJP was the only party that was politicising the matter.Drawing attention to the recent survey on divorce rates in the Muslims conducted under the RTI in 6 states, Khan claimed that results showed divorce rates in the community to be almost negligible.'Divorce rates in other religious communities are much more than among Muslims. We don't want to embarrass the BJP by disclosing these figures. They must first look to rectify these before indulging in Shariat and the Quran,' he added.ANI

UP  CM  supposedly made the statement at Gorakhpur a little before speaking to RSS workers at a separate meeting where he told them to behave according to the ideology they propagate. On the second day of his Gorakhpur visit on Sunday, Adityanath first held the closed-door meeting with Vahini leaders of the Gorakhpur region at the Gorakhnath temple. He told them to monitor the execution of Govt  schemes and projects at the ground level and make a complaint to higher-ups in the Govt  and the organisation if they found any discrepancy. “The CM has asked leaders and workers to behave with decency,” said P K Mall, the state organisation secretary of the Vahini. indianexpress

Niti Aayog has suggested a synchronised two-phase Lok Sabha and assembly polls from 2024 so as to ensure minimum 'campaign-mode' disruption to governance.Outlining the details, policy think-tank has said implementing the proposal may necessitate a maximum one-time curtailment or extension of some state assemblies. It has made Election Commission the nodal agency to look into the suggestion and recommended setting up of a working group of stakeholders for deciding a road-map for synchronised elections.A report will be finalised within 6 months and final blue-print will be ready by next March, as per draft 3-year action agenda for 2017-18 to 2019-20.The draft report was circulated among the governing council members (consisting of CM s of all states and others) of Niti Aayog on April 23.The recommendation assumes significance as President Pranab Mukherjee and PM  Narendra Modi have pitched for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls.'All elections in India should happen in a free, fair and synchronised manner so as to cause minimum 'campaign-mode' disruption to governance. We may begin work towards switching to a synchronised two-phase election from the 2024 election to the Lok Sabha,' the Niti Aayog draft report says.'This would require a maximum one-time curtailment or extension of some state assemblies,' it says. The dhow operated by two Indians had entered Sri Lanka's northern waters after crossing the sea border, said navy spokesman Chaminda Walakuluge.'Coastguard noticed that there were very small children on board and escorted the boat to a port and provided them with emergency assistance,' Walakuluge told AFP.He said seven men, seven women and 16 children were on board, in addition to the two-man Indian crew who had been detained pending investigations.'There was a 15-day-old baby and a four-month-old child on board,' Walakuluge said. 'We have taken them to port and provided food and medical attention.'He said it appeared that the passengers had left India, where they had lived for about four years as refugees. Nuh (Haryana); The economics of life has not been impressive for Azmat since he was attacked along with Pehlu Khan and three others by cow protection vigilantes in Rajasthan’s Alwar for allegedly smuggling the bovines for slaughter—exactly a month ago.The group, traditionally dairy farmers hailing from Jaisinghpur village in Haryana’s Nuh district, had bought cows from the cattle fair in Jaipur and were returning when they were attacked. While Pehlu Khan’s family has received financial assistance from some organisations after his death, bed-ridden Azmat and Rafeeq are staring at a livelihood crisis and rising debts.Ex-, who is recovering from a spine injury sustained in the attack, had purchased three cows for Rs 75,000. “The attackers also snatched Rs 35,000 from me,” he says, shooing away flies settling on his face. His brother Yusuf, who works in Mathura, says that they have spent nearly Rs 1.5 lakh already on Azmat’s treatment. “I have to take him to AIIMS, Delhi, every 3-4 days for treatment, and each trip costs about Rs 5,000. All our savings have dried up and we are running into debts,” he says.“There is no milk in the house. Whatever little we get, we dilute it and give it to Azmat’s little child (his one-year-old daughter),” says Azmat’s mother. hindustantimes

Turkey threatens more strikes on US-allied Syrian Kurds
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/04/turkey-threatens-strikes-allied-syrian-kurds-170430131803208.html
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday said Ankara was "seriously saddened" by footage showing US military vehicles operating close to the border with Syrian Kurdish fighters, threatening further military action against a group Turkey sees as "terrorists".His comments came amid rising tensions over the weekend along the border, with both Ankara and Washington moving armoured vehicles to the area. Turkish forces last week carried out deadly air strikes on military positions belonging to the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), angering the US and sparking days of border clashes with the Kurdish fighters. The US sent military vehicles with American flags to the Syrian side of the frontier accompanied by YPG fighters to carry out patrols, in an apparent bid to prevent further fighting. aljazeera

Controversial amendments expand Sisi’s powers over Egypt’s judiciary
https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20170501-controversial-amendments-expand-sisis-powers-over-egypts-judiciary/
Egypt’s highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial Council, sent the names of three judges to President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Sunday for him to choose one of them to head the Court of Cassation, the country’s highest appeals court, in line with a newly amended law that now expands the president’s powers over the judicial system.Sisi was Egypt’s defence minister when he led the military ouster of then President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, and he was later elected president in 2014. He has been widely criticised by local and international human rights advocates for what they see as broad human rights violations committed by the state under his rule.Strongly opposed by a number of judicial bodies, the new law was ratified by Sisi on Thursday after it was approved by parliament. Prior to the amendments, courts’ top judges were selected by the judiciary on the basis of seniority and the president only gave ceremonial approval. The State Council had expressed its rejection of the new law in a statement last week, describing the amendments as unconstitutional. Egypt’s constitution stipulates that judicial bodies must be consulted on bills related to the judicial authority, although it does not oblige the parliament to abide by the judicial bodies’ recommendations. middleeastmonitor
Hamas to soften stance on Israel, Muslim Brotherhood in policy document:Reuters
http://www.dnaindia.com/world/report-hamas-to-soften-stance-on-israel-muslim-brotherhood-in-policy-document-sources-2423999
The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas will remove a call for Israel's destruction and drop its association with the Muslim Brotherhood in a new policy document to be issued on Monday, Gulf Arab sources said.Hamas' move appears aimed at improving relations with Gulf Arab states and Egypt, which label the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, as well as with Western countries, many of which classify Hamas as a terrorist group over its hostility to Israel. The sources said Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, will say in the document that it agrees to a transitional Palestinian state along the borders from 1967, when Israel captured Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem in a war with Arab states. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.A future state encompassing Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem along 1967 borders is the goal of Hamas' main political rival, the Fatah movement led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. His Palestinian Authority has engaged in peace talks with Israel on that basis, although the last, US-mediated round collapsed three years ago. The revised Hamas political document, to be announced later on Monday, will still reject Israel's right to exist and back "armed struggle" against it, said the Gulf Arab sources.A Hamas spokesman in Qatar declined to comment. There was no immediate comment from Egypt and Gulf Arab states.
