After Rohith Vemula now JNU Dalit scholar found dead; his FB post reveals, he was unhappy over inequality at university
http://www.indiatimes.com/news/india/jnu-dalit-student-who-committed-suicide-was-unhappy-over-unequal-treatment-at-university-273389.html
Just a few days after writing a fiery Facebook post on being 'denied equality' on campus, JNU student was found hanging from the ceiling. Muthukrishnan Jeevanantham, 27, also known as Krish Rajini to friends on Facebook, allegedly committed suicide at his friend’s place in Munirka Vihar, South Delhi. "A PCR call was received at 5.05 pm yesterday that a person had locked himself in a room at a house in Munirka Vihar," Police said.According to police, no suicide note was found from the spot.A South Korean IT professional and friend of Muthu Krishanan told DNA, "He had come to his friend’s house this afternoon to have food. He said he wanted to sleep and went to a room and locked himself in."Muthu Krishanan was from Tamil Nadu's Salem district. He completed MPhil from the University of Hyderabad (UoH) in 2015 before joining JNU for PhD. On his last Facebook post, on March 10, he complained about inequality that 'marginals' faced in the institution. "There is no Equality in M.phil/Phd Admission, there is no equalitiy (sic) in Viva–voce, there is only denial of equality, denying prof.Sukhadeo thorat recommendation, denying Students protest places in Ad – block, denying the education of the Marginal's. When Equality is denied everything is denied," he wrote.Krishnan was an active member of the protests post Rohith Vemula's death. Vemula had also committed suicide blaming discriminations in Hyderabad University. In a 2016 blogpost, he wrote:"I did not want to hurt her by recalling Rohith’s memories. I remembered myself with Rohith. I met Rohith 6 times. The first time, I met Rohith at the south-campus shop com during a protest rally from the north campus. He was wearing a light gray color shirt, while me and prashanth  was in a black shirt. He was enthusiastically raising slogans. That time I wondered why I never raised slogans. May be the language barrier, I told myself. But I was amazed with his leadership skills."JNU Students Union (JNUSU) is alleging that Krishnan was targeted for his association with the movement seeking justice for Rohith Vemula and depression made him take the extreme step. Parliament passes Enemy Property bill
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/parliament-passes-enemy-property-bill-4568723/
New Delhi:Successors of those who migrated to Pakistan and China during partition will have no claim over the properties left behind in India, with Parliament on Tuesday passing a bill to amend a 49-year-old law. Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2016, which amends the Enemy Property Act, 1968, was passed by voice vote in Lok Sabha, incorporating the amendments made by the Rajya Sabha last week. Lok Sabha had passed the bill earlier but certain amendments were introduced to it in the Rajya Sabha, on the recommendations of a Select Committee. Those amendments had to be approved by Lower House, which was done on Tuesday. RSP member NK Premachandran had moved a statutory amendment seeking to introduce clarity with regard to those properties which had already been acquired by the heirs of the ‘enemy’ property owners, a reference to nationals of Pakistan and China. According to the bill, “Enemy property” refers to any property belonging to, held or managed on behalf of an enemy, an enemy subject or an enemy firm. Govt has vested these properties in the Custodian of Enemy Property for India, an office instituted under the central govt. After the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, Enemy Property Act was enacted in 1968, which regulates such properties and lists the Custodian’s powers.PTI
Jammu: Right-wing groups try to evict Rohingya refugees
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2017/03/jammu-wing-groups-evict-rohingya-refugees-170305130951595.html
Jammu:Abdul Kareem and Zahida Begum run a small corner store in Bhatindi, an affluent residential area of Jammu city. When they arrived here in 2012, after fleeing massacres in Myanmar's Rakhine state, the residents of this mainly Muslim neighbourhood of the largely Hindu city rallied around them, offering the young couple a space from which to run the shop. Now they live in a cramped room beside the shop with their three sons, aged two, six and eight. The children do not attend school, although they say they are hoping to send the oldest one this year. The family are Rohingya Muslims - one of the world's most persecuted ethnic groups - but they say people here have been kind.India has been receiving Rohingya refugees from Myanmar since 2008. They arrived in large numbers during 2012, when anti-Rohingya persecution intensified in neighbouring Myanmar.According to figures shared by Development and Justice Initiative (DAJI), a NGO that works with UNHCR, and based on UNHCR data, there are an estimated 10,000 Rohingya refugees living in India. Approximately 5,700 live in and around the city of Jammu, although some sources claim the number could, in fact, be much higher. But in early Feb,the Rohingya refugees started to notice billboards appearing around the city. "Rohingyas, Bangladeshis quit Jammu," they declared, asking residents to "Wake up...save history, culture and identity of Dogras," referring to the Hindu-majority community of Jammu.J&K National Panthers Party, a right-wing Hindu political party, whose leader, Harsh Dev Singh, has made public statements about a conspiracy to engineer "demographic changes" in the region, is behind the billboards. His theories have found some resonance in a state fractured by the politics of demography; where a general mistrust exists between residents of the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley and those of the southern Jammu region, where Hindus form two-thirds of the population."There is alarm among the general masses [in the city]," Singh told Al Jazeera about the presence of the Muslim Rohingya refugees.Last month, a member of the BJP, Hunar Gupta, petitioned the Jammu High Court, seeking the identification and deportation of Rohingya refugees.Aljazeera

Pulwama:For Mohammad Akram Mir, 55 a farmer, marriage of his elder daughter married felt like a dream come true. The dates were set for Nov.2016 and the shopping had started months earlier. But more than Akram, it was his 16-year-old girl Azra Jan who could not control the joy of watching her elder sister get married. She had bought two dresses for the occasion and had planned to put henna on her hands. But weeks before the planned marriage, a tragedy struck the Mir family. On Oct.31, as other family members went to a nearby town to buy clothes and jewellery for the bride, Azra waited at home in Rahmoo village. And, as we have shown in earlier stories (which can be read here and here), this was a day when the village youth were pelting stones at the security forces following the death of over 100 protesters in the previous months. Azra could hear the tear gas shells, pellet guns, stun grenades and pepper gas grenades being fired and lobbed in the main Rahmoo market.By 3 pm that day, the intensity of tear gas shelling had increased manifold. Azra saw security forces barging into the neighbouring home, vandalising property and beating residents. Feeling threatened as she was alone in the house, she came out and tried to run towards the main road. It proved to be a costly mistake. The moment she stepped out, pellets hit her chest and face as they were raining over her village that day. twocircles

We demand that these elections should be held using the traditional ballot system,” he wrote.Following the landslide victory of BJP in UP  assembly polls, BSP supremo had openly questioned the reliability of EVMs.Though AAP leadership has desisted from attributing the party’s loss in Punjab to faulty EVMs,Kejriwal retweeted former co-worker Prashant Bhushan’s tweet targetting BJP on the issue on Tuesday.“Those who screamed “democracy at risk due to EVMs” while in opposition, are now celebrating “democracy by EVMs”, once in power,” Bhushan tweeted. New Delhi:PM  Narendra Modi has inched closer to getting a person of his choice as the country’s next President. A three-fourth majority in UP  fills much of the deficit that the BJP had to get its nominee occupy the Raisina Hils. Will that cheer up BJP’s two senior leaders, LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, who now have a largely ceremonial role in party’s Margdarshak Mandal? Advani and Joshi, both, were Modi’s mentors in Delhi and Ahmedabad. During his initial days in Delhi, Modi would spend most of his evening taking lessons from Joshi. When Joshi unfurled the tricolour at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk in 1992, he had Modi by his side. It was Modi’s first tryst with the limelight. The credit to send Modi to Gujarat to take over as chief minster goes to Advani who also stood by him in his days of crisis. Will Modi now offer guru dakshina to his mentors? BJP leaders have their fingers crossed but there is underlying feeling that it would be unlikely.“Lagta nahi hai” is the common refrain of BJP leaders on the possibility of the two veterans becoming country’s President and Vice- President.Election for a new President is due in July when Pranab Mukherjee completes his five-year term. Vice-President Hamid Ansari ends his second term in August. Many names and theories are doing the rounds in BJP circles about who will occupy the top two seats. From a Dalit to a woman and a tribal to a RSS choice; the guessing game is far from over.Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu,Bihar governor Ramnath Kovid, Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot, I&B Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and nominated Rajya Sabha member Narendra Jadhav-BJP leaders’ guess list is just growing. Some don’t even rule out a second term to incumbent Pranab Mukherjee.

Domkal: ATS of Maharashtra has launched an inquiry into the disappearance of 27 Murshidabad-based pilgrims in Saudi Arabia's Jeddah. The probe was initiated after a Mumbai-based travel agent alerted the ATS that the pilgrims neither reached their hotel nor come back on their expected date of return. ATS has also duly informed the centre about the missing persons.Among the 27 people who left for Jeddah is 44-year-old Sekh Nuruzzaman, a resident of Murshidabad's Domkal, who was supposed to return on Feb.22. His travel agent says that while Nuruzzaman left for Haj Umrah but did not return."Mumbai ATS called me and asked for information, which I shared. I have given them passport information, visa details, contact details of their team leader," says the travel agent to NDTV, on condition of anonymity. But, interestingly, none of the local police stations in West Bengal's Murshidabad have any complaints regarding people going missing in Saudi Arabia. Even Nuruzzaman's wife says that he is working in Jeddah and calls her regularly to check on his family."I don't know what he is doing there. The next time he calls, I will ask him and let you know. Whenever he calls, he tells me he is fine. I am sure he is not involved in anything illegal," she says. Local police sources say that Murshidabad sends thousands of people to different parts of Saudi Arabia as labourers, many of whom never return."This is why there are no missing complaints," they say.NDTV

Mumbai:“On May 1, 1956, freedom fighter Jayaprakash Narayan had written a letter to the then PM  Jawaharlal Nehru. JP had written that 95% of the Muslims in J&K do not want to be part of India, and it is unfair for India to rule Kashmir. If he were alive today, he could be arrested under the UAPA, for talking about secession,” said former High Court Judge Hosbet Suresh at a seminar in Marine Lines on Saturday. The seminar organised by People’s Movement against UAPA saw participation of a number of victims, former High Court judges, and police officers, who voiced their opinion against the anti-terrorism law. UAPA was enacted post 26/11 attacks. Pointing out the ‘draconian’ provisions, KP Mohamed Sheriff, vice-chairperson of National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations, said, “Under Section 43(d) of the Act, there is no anticipatory bail or bail after arrest. One can be detained without a charge up to 180 days. The trials conducted are in-camera closed-room ones. There are provisions for secret witnesses. How can you ensure a fair trial under such a law? Even though thousands are languishing in jails, there is a conviction rate of only 1.8%.”Kamal Faruqui, convener of the event, said the law acts as a tool for discrimination against the Muslims. Another member EM Abdul Rehman accused the judiciary of discrimination. Arun Ferreira, an advocate who was arrested under the UAPA, said the police are given a free hand under the law. The hindu

Hyderabad:On a day when the Hyderabad High Court accepted the case filed by two women from the city, who were pronounced triple talaq by their husbands residing in the US through WhatsApp, the women said Sharia was misused in their case. One of the petitioners, Mehreen Noor told Express, “My husband Usman Quraishi typed talaq thrice for no fault of mine. I have not even been able to talk to him ever since then. I do believe in Sharia but in my case it is being misused.”  “This divorce in violation of Article 14 and 21 of our Constitution and also violation of Muslim Personal Law Board and dissolution of Muslim Marriage Act. Hence, I will go by the uniform civil code to seek justice, she pointed out.”Meanwhile, seconding her stand, Mehreen’s sister-in-law Syeda Fatima, whose in-laws stated that their son Syed Fayazuddin has pronounced triple talaq to her, said, “After admitting me to hospital for delivery in January, 2016, my husband did not come to see me once. Meanwhile, my in-laws told my husband that I went with the child to my mother instead of coming to him,” she said.“This is how they infuriated him against me and he left for the US without meeting us. Now, my in-laws say that he divorced me and sent me a notice. I have not received any such notice,” she added. “I am tired of different Muslim scholars and clergies coming up with different interpretations of Sharia to solve our case,” she added. But the atmosphere is still tense in several areas, where the police is on tenterhooks and fears clashes. huffingtonpost

Note ban will not help India in corruption fight: US-based economist Srinivasan
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/note-ban-will-not-help-india-in-corruption-fight-srinivasan/articleshow/57631164.cms
New Delhi: Noted US-based economist TN Srinivasan has cast serious doubts on the efficacy of the cash ban move, saying it will not help in fighting the menace of black money. Srinivasan of Yale University, who at one point taught RBI governor Urjit Patel, emphasized that the govt needs to come out with a "well thought-out" policy to combat corruption. "There was and is no well thought-out anti-corruption policy to combat corruption. Rooting out corruption and increasing transparency through a policy such as demonetization as implemented in India are unlikely to come about," Srinivasan, Samuel C Park Jr Professor Emeritus of Economics, Yale University said.PTI

European court rules employers can ban women from wearing Islamic headscarves and religious symbols
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/european-court-justice-islamic-headscarf-hijab-ban-employers-legal-religious-symbols-case-belgium-a7628626.html
European Court of Justice has ruled that companies can ban employees from wearing the Islamic headscarf, but only as part of prohibitions including other religious and political symbols. It is the first case of its kind amid a series of legal disputes over the right for Muslim women to wear the hijab at work.“An internal rule of an undertaking which prohibits the visible wearing of any political, philosophical or religious sign does not constitute direct discrimination,” the court said in a statement. “However, in the absence of such a rule, the willingness of an employer to take account of the wishes of a customer no longer to have the employer's services provided by a worker wearing an Islamic headscarf cannot be considered an occupational requirement that could rule out discrimination.” Luxembourg-based court found that a headscarf ban may also constitute “indirect discrimination” if people adhering to a particular religion or belief, such as Muslims, are put at a particular disadvantage. But indirect discrimination is permissible if it is “objectively justified by a legitimate aim”, such as a company's policy of neutrality, provided that the means of achieving it are appropriate and necessary.Independent

Washington:A Muslim couple has sued US’ United Airlines for forcing them off a flight last year after they sought help with a child booster seat, alleging that they were discriminated against based on faith. Mohamad and Eaman Shebley, of northern Chicago suburbs, alleged that they were preparing to take off on a flight from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Washington DC when they were suddenly kicked off.The Shebleys filed the lawsuit on Friday in a federal court through attorneys with the local chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in connection with the March 20, 2016, incident aboard the SkyWest flight, operating as United Express from Chicago to Washington. An attorney for the couple said they think “inherent bias” prompted flight crew members to kick the Shebleys off the United Flight after Eaman asked for assistance with a child booster seat.PTI

UN: Syria jets deliberately hit Damascus water supply
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/03/syria-jets-deliberately-hit-damascus-water-supply-170314110322695.html
UN investigators have accused Syria's air force of deliberately bombing water facilities in December on the outskirts of Damascus, a war crime that cut off water for 5.5 million people in and around the capital.Rebels had controlled the springs of the Wadi Barada valley, northwest of Damascus, since 2012 and faced a major offensive by Syrian govt forces and their allies, despite a ceasefire deal. The rebels withdrew at the end of Jan. UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria on Tuesday said it had found no evidence of deliberate contamination of the water supply or demolition by armed groups, as the Syrian govt maintained at the time.Commission said there were no reports of people suffering water contamination on or before Dec23, when Syrian air force hit Ain al-Fijeh spring with at least 2 air raids."While the presence of armed group fighters at (the) spring constituted a military target, the extensive damage inflicted to the spring had a devastating impact on more than five million civilians in both govt and opposition controlled areas who were deprived of regular access to potable water for over 1 month," report, which based its conclusions on interviews with residents and satellite imagery, as well as publicly available information, said."Attack amounts to the war crime of attacking objects indispensable for the survival of the civilian population, and further violated the principle of proportionality in attacks."Meanwhile, Syrian opposition said it would not attend a third round of Syria talks on Tuesday in Astana, leaving little hope for a breakthrough in ending conflict.aljazeera

Iraqi forces battling ISIL faced tough resistance from snipers and mortar rounds on Monday as they tried to advance on Mosul's Old City and a bridge across the Tigris River in their campaign to retake it.Progress was slowed by heavy rain but units were only 100 metres from the Iron Bridge that connects the Old City with the eastern side of Mosul, military officials said. Since starting the campaign in October to push the ISIL out of its last stronghold in the country, Iraqi forces with US-led coalition support have recaptured eastern Mosul and about 40% of the city's west. aljazeera
