Saraikela:Distraught and inconsolable, yet Shehnaz Begum, mother-in-law of 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari, victim of Jharkhand mob lynching, could gather all her strength to speak.“My son-in-law would have been alive had the administration showed a little bit of sympathy and given the minimum medical attention,” said Ms. Begum holding her teenage widowed daughter tight. “First it was the religiously motivated mob that meted out instant justice, and secondly, the administration committed cold-blooded murder by letting Tabrez die of excruciating pain. To save his life, the police at least could have admitted him in any hospital,” she said. The non-descript Kadamdia village, 15 km from the district headquarters town of Saraikela, where Tabrez’s family lives, has been receiving media and political attention. 3 days after Tabrez’s death,Collector of Saraikela-Kharasawan Chhabi Ranjan and Superintendent of Police Karthik S reached Kadamdia late on Monday evening to assure the family of justice, while another group of district officials landed in the village early Tuesday morning. And hordes of media professionals and rights activists have been thronging the place.“My son-in-law did not deserve such death,” Begum kept saying to everyone. Tabrez, who had lost both his parents at a very early age, had migrated to Pune to eke out his livelihood eight years ago. In April, he returned to his village to get married. On April 27, his marriage was solemnized with Sahista Pervez, 19. The couple would have gone back to Pune in few days.According to his extended family members, he was returning after meeting his aunt from Jamshedpur on June 17 night when some people of Dhatkidih village caught hold of him and branded him a thief.“Tabrez could have been let off with a few slaps. All hell broke loose when he revealed his name. He was tied to an electric pole and beaten up the whole night.Later, he was dragged to nearby bushy areas and another round of thrashing started. He was also forced to chant ‘Jai Sriram and Jai Hanuman’,” said Md Mansoor Alam, Tabrez’s uncle, who had gone to meet him at the police station after his rescue. Tabrez’s family members got the shock of their life when they met him at the Saraikela police station. “Initially, I was not allowed to enter the police station. Then I heard someone saying ‘Ab tak yeh mara kyon nahin? [why did he not die till now?]’. When inquired, I found that it was Papa Mandal, the main accused, who was shouting right inside the police station. I could not hold myself back. I entered the police station forcibly only to find Tabrez having bruises all over his body and blood stains on his face, hands and legs,” Ms. Begam said. His young wife fainted then and there. After a day, the family members again met him in jail. “His condition was even worse. I pleaded with the authorities to admit him in hospital, but nobody paid any heed to my request,” said Ms. Begum.Tabrez was admitted in the District Headquarters Hospital only when his condition suddenly deteriorated on June 22.After the video of the lynching went viral on the social media and Tabrez was heard chanting ‘Jai Sriram and Jai Hanuman’, as directed by the mob, media started taking note of the incident. Only then, police swung into action.“We have so far arrested 11 persons, including main accused Papa Mandal. Investigation is going on and more people will be rounded up if their complicity in the crime is established,” said  Karthik. When his attention was drawn to the alleged administrative bias in handling Tabrez’s case, especially his poor health condition,  Karthik said, “We are not the authority to give medical certificate. Doctors carried out medical tests on him. Tests such as x-ray and ECG were carried out multiple times.”

New Delhi:In a setback to the Congress, the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain its plea against the Election Commission’s decision to hold separate bypolls for 2 Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat necessitated by election of BJP chief Amit Shah and party leader Smriti Irani.A Vacation Bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna said, “You can file an election petition later...But we can’t stall the election process at this stage.”The Bench said it was open to the defeated candidate to file an election petition before the Gujarat High Court after the results were declared.Gujarat Congress leader Pareshbhai Dhanani had challenged Election Commission’s decision to hold separate bypolls to two vacant Rajya Sabha seats in the state. But the Bench was not convinced with submissions of the petitioner’s counsel, Vivek Tankha, regarding its intervention in the bypoll process. The EC had contended that there was no violation of any fundamental rights involved as contesting polls was only a statutory right. It had also pointed out that courts couldn’t interfere in an ongoing election process. One of the BJP candidates for the July 5 bypolls is External Affairs Minister Jaishankar. Tribune

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed, since the time she took over in 2009, has shown zero tolerance toward all terrorist activities. She has refused to give shelter to any such elements. There has not been a single terrorist activity in the last 10 years. Several academics on Tuesday issued a statement expressing “deep dismay” at the Centre’s alleged harassment of non-governmental organisation Lawyers Collective. CBI had earlier this month filed a first information report against the group in a case of alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.The academics sent their statement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, among others. The academics, who included Akeel Bilgrami, Amrita Basu, Jean Dreze, Massoud Karshenas, Shefali Chandra and others, demanded that the Centre drop all charges against Lawyers Collective. They alleged that the government is determined to “shrink democratic spaces and silence voices of dissent, particularly among members of the legal fraternity, the media and academia”, and therefore has “sought to defame the Lawyers Collective on the flimsiest of charges”.scroll.in

Fake posts with communal overtones flooding social media space in UP
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/meerut/fake-posts-with-communal-overtones-flooding-social-media-space-in-up/articleshow/69933188.cms
Meerut: Raj Kumar (name changed) shared the post with her just for its sensational value-- a cabbie murdering 250 people in UP’s Meerut. And then, his sister-in-law sent it across to her close friend. The fake WhatsApp message went on and on from one smart phone to the other, till it became “viral” and attracted the glare of police brass, which termed it another striking example of fake post “especially-designed” to malign people of minority community. “Perpetrators in most of these fake posts are people from minority community,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity. The trend is more conspicuous in UP’s troubled western part. Police in the region has now decided to crack the whip against such messages. Police in UP, assisted by its “ill-equipped” cyber cell, is fighting hard to check communal flare ups and mob attacks fuelled by such fake posts on social media platforms, like WhatsApp and Twitter. Last year, alarmed by over 20 deaths, Union home ministry had sought a report on social media rumours from police chiefs of all the states. Several other such posts, mostly fakes, including that of vandalisation of statues of deities and also that of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar, are regular features of WhatsApp groups, meant to keep communal pot boiling. Azam Khan hits out at govt for attacks on minorities, Owaisi says India can't be $5 trillion economy if issues not addressed
https://www.news18.com/news/politics/parliament-live-bjp-govt-tables-aadhar-bill-upper-caste-poor-quota-bill-in-lok-sabha-amid-uproar-2200845.html
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party leader Mohd Azam Khan on Monday hit out at the govt in Lok Sabha on the issue of attacks on members of the minority community over recital of Vande Matram even as AIMIM's Assaduddin Owaisi warned that alleged lynchings would prevent India from becoming a $5 trillion economy.Participating in the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, Khan said Muslims had a choice to go to Pakistan during Partition."Our forefathers decided to stay here. They said this is our country. Graves of our forefathers are here .. You (BJP) never had this choice (of going to Pakistan)," he said.He said it hurts when Muslims are forced to recite 'vande matram'. "If the Constitution says one has to recite from a religious book, I will be the first one to do so," he said.Owaisi said if Muslims are lynched in the name of cow slaughter and wearing skull cap every month, then India would not be able to become $5 trillion economies as planned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.On the issue of the bill on banning the practice of instant triple talaq, Khan said he will follow what is mentioned in the Holy Quran and "nothing else". He said if the practice is criminalised, then the youth will lose faith in the institution of marriage and go for live-in relations.Khan alleged that 77,000 families in and around Rampur were not allowed to cast vote in the Lok Sabha elections. He said if he is proved wrong, he was ready to face consequences.News18

https://www.news18.com/news/politics/give-us-back-our-old-india-ghulam-nabi-azad-in-rajya-sabha-raises-concern-over-communal-violence-2201559.html
New Delhi: Reacting to the recent incidents of lynchings and violence against minorities, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday said Jharkhand has become a factory of lynching and violence. He asked the ruling BJP to keep with it the 'New India' and give back an 'Old India' where love and culture prevailed. The creation of a 'New India' found frequent mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election rallies in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.“In 'Old India', there was no hatred, anger or lynching. 'New India' is one where humans are enemies of each other. You won't be scared of animals in a jungle, but you'll be scared of humans in a colony. Give us an India where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians live for each other,” Azad said in the Upper House.Raising concerns over the rising incidents of communal hatred, the Congress leader asked the BJP to keep its 'New India' to itself. “Hindus used to feel pain when Muslims and Dalits used to get hurt (in old India). When something used to get into the eyes of Hindus, Muslims and Dalits used to shed tears for them,” he added.Referring to the President's speech on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th-anniversary celebrations, Azad said, unfortunately, a candidate of the ruling party called the killer of the Father of Nation a patriot and no action was taken and the candidate was a parliamentarian now.News18
BSP, SP begin race for number 2 position in UP; Mayawati eyes minority votes
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/bsp-sp-begin-race-for-number-2-position-in-up-mayawati-eyes-minority-votes/articleshow/69932132.cms
With former chief minister Mayawati’s decision to go it alone in all future electoral battles, it's now the start of a race between BSP and SP for the “number 2” position in the politically crucial state of UP.BSP supremo's announcement came on Twitter on Monday, a day after she held a meeting with workers to review the party's performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls. "In the interest of the party and the movement, the party will contest all small and big elections on its own strength," she tweeted. In the Lok Sabha elections, BSP won 10 seats, up from the zero in 2014, but SP just managed to maintain its tally of five seats.BSP, to begin with, apparently wants to emerge the principal challenger to the ruling BJP in the byelections to be held soon for 12 assembly seats in the state. These bypolls have been necessitated following the election of 11 MLAs to the Lok Sabha, and the disqualification of one MLA from Hamirpur. For that BSP has plans to woo voters from the Muslim community, who constitute one of the main support bases for Samajwadi Party in UP. In her speech at the party’s national convention on Sunday, she tried to send out the message that BSP is a better political platform for minority voters.A source in BSP pointed out that Mayawati’s decision to select Danish Ali as leader of her party in the Lok Sabha was a step in this direction. "It clearly indicated she is desperate to eat into SP’s minority support base. Danish would be in a position to place BSP’s views on different issues in the Lok Sabha as the leader of his party,” the source said. BSP sources also said Mayawati has given top priority to a good show in the upcoming Assembly byelections.economic times

https://indianexpress.com/article/india/jk-talks-with-hurriyat-a-retrograde-step-setback-to-ongoing-operations-against-terror-says-bjp-5797630/
Jammu :A day after Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said “there will be a positive response” if “meaningful” talks are initiated by the Centre, the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday said any talks with the separatists at this stage would be counter-productive and a retrograde step.“The Joint Resistance Leadership (a body of separatists groups) should publicly acknowledge the indisputable status of Jammu and Kashmir and it being an integral part of India. They should also commit their loyalty to Constitution of India and seek talks only under its ambit,” state BJP spokesperson Anil Gupta said in a statement. Any talks with the JRL or Hurriyat at this stage without them publicly accepting these “pre-conditions” will be “counter-productive and a retrograde step”, he added. The reaction from the saffron party after Farooq called for a tripartite talk between the Kashmiri leadership, New Delhi and Islamabad for resolution of all issues, including Kashmir. “As the most affected party with daily killings of our young men, we would naturally want a peaceful resolution of the issue,” he had said.indianexpress

The suspension follows a dispute over control of biometric data that WFP uses to ensure food aid was not being diverted from its intended recipients. The Houthis, who control northern Yemen, said the WFP's insistence on controlling the data breached Yemeni law and launched a fierce media campaign against UN organisation, accusing it of sending spoiled food.Aljazeera
