INDIA: ECONOMY
GDP growth hits 3-year low of 5.7%, GST and demonetisation seen as major factors
http://indianexpress.com/article/business/economy/gdp-growth-hits-three-year-low-of-5-7-in-q1-4822486/
New Delhi:The economic growth of India slipped to a three-year low of 5.7% in April-June as disruptions caused by demonetisation spilled over to the third straight quarter amid slowdown in manufacturing activities.According to the government data, the GDP had expanded by 6.1 per cent in the preceding quarter. This compares with revised growth of 7.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2016-17.Here are some reactions:Anjali Verma, Economist, Phillipcapital Inida, Mumbai said, “The impact of demonetisation has faded, definitely. But the next quarter impact will be of GST (goods and services tax), which will have an adverse impact on growth overall. GST impact is just a one quarter phenomena, or at best one month after that. But then in the medium to long term it’s expected to be a positive. I would expect GDP for the full year will be somewhere closer to 6 percent. We don’t expect any rate cuts from here on. RBI will stay hooked on to inflation.”Abheek Barua, Chief Economist, HDFC BANK, New Delhi said, “GDP numbers are certainly disappointing. The numbers seem to suggest that the slowdown from last quarter has intensified due to the combination of long-term slowdown and temporary shock factors like demonetisation and GST  destocking. A rate cut from RBI now becomes more and more probable, not immediately, but over the next 6 months. We have to revise our GDP outlook numbers for the full year closer or perhaps lower than 7 percent.”Indranil Pan, Group Economist, IDFC BANK, Mumbai said, “The downside impact from demonetisation is no longer going to be there. Going ahead growth will be driven by GST and the pace of cleaning banks’ balance sheets to improve the credit culture in the economy. In my opinion, the bank balance sheet problem will take a longer time than what others are expecting as it is not only cleaning the bad debt, but also improving capital base following mergers in the sector. There is a need to focus on the quality of growth rather than quantity, and for this we can afford to loosen our fiscal deficit target, spend more on investments rather than depend only on consumption to fuel growth.” indianexpress
India seen posting stronger economic growth as shock from cash clampdown, post-GST fades: Reuters
http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/india-seen-posting-stronger-economic-growth-as-shock-from-cash-clampdown-fades-2373641.html
India's economy likely showed further signs of recovery in the latest quarter from a shock cash squeeze late last year, but the rebound is not expected to be strong enough to help it reclaim the crown of the world's fastest-growing major economy.GDP is expected to have expanded 6.6% in the April-June quarter from a year earlier, according to economists polled by Reuters. That would mark a solid acceleration from 6.1 % growth in Jan-March, but still lag China's 6.9% print in the latest quarter. Forecasts ranged from 5.7 to 7.2%. PM Modi's shock decision last Nov.to scrap high-value old banknotes wiped out about 86% of currency in circulation virtually overnight, pounding consumer demand.Since then, high frequency indicators such as sales of 2-wheel vehicles, oil consumption, cargo traffic and rail freight have shown the impact of the cash clampdown is gradually fading."The economy likely dusted off the post-demonetisation lull," said Radhika Rao, an economist at DBS Bank in Singapore.Yet, Asia's 3rd-largest economy is far away from firing on all cylinders - capital spending remains weak and debt-laden banks are still circumspect in lending. Confusion over a new GST and high debt levels in rural areas could also dampen activity in coming months. The launch of a GST on July1 has caused chaos on the ground as ambiguous rules have left firms confused over how to price their products. Business surveys showed both services and manufacturing activity contracted at their fastest rate in years in July.In rural areas, huge inventories of grain from last year's record harvest has led to large declines in prices, leaving millions of farmers in debt.

Demonetisation hits RBI’s profit margins: SBI Research
http://www.thehindu.com/business/Economy/demonetisation-hits-rbis-profit-margins-sbi-research/article19593426.ece?homepage=true
New Delhi:Demonetisation has caused net loss to RBI’s seigniorage - the profit accruing from currency issuances and liquidity operations - besides increasing the cost of printing notes, says an SBI Research report. On November 8 last year, the Govt  had banned old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes in an attempt to weed out black money in the country. The old notes were allowed to be deposited in banks, with unusual deposits coming under income tax scrutiny.“The demonetisation exercise has resulted in net loss of seigniorage to RBI,” SBI’s research report Ecowrap said. “In the current case, there is a seigniorage loss, as the face value of ₹15.28 trillion of ₹17.1 trillion has been printed,” it said.PTI

http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/shame-on-rbi-which-recommended-demonetisation-chidambaram/story-QWoUigfw3BMsZLyUIhwolK.html
New Delhi: Ex-finance minister P Chidambaram has used RBI figures to lash out at it, saying one %  of the demonetised notes not coming back to the central bank was a “shame on RBI”.He also questioned Modi Govt whether its demonetisation decision was designed to convert black money into white. The Congress said Govt  utterly failed and 104 innocent lives were lost during the exercise and demanded an apology from the PM .“99% notes legally exchanged! Was demonetisation a scheme designed to convert black money into white?,” Chidambaram said on Twitter. He also said that the economists behind the demonetisation move “deserve Nobel prize” as the RBI gained Rs 16,000 crore, but lost Rs 21,000 crore in printing new notes.“Rs 16000 cr out of demonetised notes of Rs 1544,000 cr did not come back to RBI.That is 1%. Shame on RBI which ‘recommended’ demonetisation.“RBI ‘gained’ Rs 16000 crore, but ‘lost’ Rs 21000 crore in printing new notes! The economists deserve Nobel Prize,” he said in a series of tweets. All but 1.4 %  of the old Rs 1,000 notes have come back into the banking system post demonetisation, RBI said in its annual report for 2016-17.Out of 632.6 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 currency notes in circulation, 8.9 crore have not been returned post the note ban last Nov, it said.Congress in-charge of communication department Randeep Surjewala said demonetisation is nothing but a “disaster” in which 104 innocent people were killed while ‘corrupt’ made ‘windfall gains’.He also said that the demonetisation scam not only dented institutional sanctity of RBI, but also credibility of India abroad and demanded an apology from PM.“Demonetisation Scam, not only dented institutional sanctity of RBI,but also credibility of India abroad.PM should apologise to the nation,” he said in a series of tweets. hindustantimes

New Delhi:Opposition parties launched a stinging attack on the Centre over last year’s demonetisation exercise, with the Congress seeking an apology from PM Narendra Modi after RBI data showed that nearly 99% of the banned banknotes were deposited in banks.RBI annual report released on Wednesday raised doubts whether demonetisation achieved the Govt ’s claims on the move as a “surgical strike” on black money. Demonetisation critics say that tax evaders managed to legalise their unaccounted money through shell companies and proxies, made high-value purchases using backdated bills and colluded with bank officials to exchange old currency. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the move was a “colossal disaster” that “cost innocent lives” and “ruined” the economy”.West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said RBI data “points to a big scam”.“Is not the RBI’s revelation this evening on demonetisation pointing to a big scam?” Banerjee wrote on her Facebook wall.HT

Hadiya beaten up, cried for help: Activists protesting in front of Kerala convert's house
http://www.thenewsminute.com/article/hadiya-beaten-cried-help-activists-protesting-front-kerala-converts-house-67615
24-year-old old Hadiya, a Muslim convert from Kerala's Kottayam district has been under house arrest since May this year, after the Kerala HC annulled her marriage to a Muslim man. On Wednesday, 5 women – students, journalists and a filmmaker – carried out a silent protest outside Hadiya's house in Vaikkom, criticising the gross violation of human rights. The protest came after the women were denied permission to meet Hadiya or give her the books and gifts they had brought for her. Their faces covered, the women held placards that read, "Release Hadiya from house arrest" and "Free Hadiya, We say no to house arrest".With hashtag #hughadiya, the protesters took to Facebook with a video explaining the reasons for their protest."We came here to meet Hadiya, but it’s been 15 minutes since we reached here and we have not been allowed to enter the house. We have come here to give some sweets, clothes and books to Hadiya,” a protester said.“At this point, our request is not to meet Hadiya in person, but to send across these gifts we got her. But when we spoke to the parents, they told us that they were providing everything Hadiya needs, and that nobody else should get anything for her. But what we saw here was Hadiya telling us from the window to help her, since she was being beaten up," she added. One of the protesters Anusha Paul, a documentary film maker, told TNM that they wanted to give Hadiya some gifts because Onam is coming up. "We understand it is difficult to get permission from her parents for us to meet her. But we hope we'll be able to speak to the parents and get these gifts delivered to her. Onam is coming up, and we want to give her some clothes, flowers and sweets. Also a note pad, in which she can write," Anusha said. Anusha also alleged that the police personnel on duty outside Hadiya’s house had behaved rudely with them."Local residents too gathered and started telling everyone that we were terrorists. There was a CI on duty and he spoke to us very rudely and insulted us. The husband of one of the women had accompanied us and was standing a little away from where we were protesting. CI then picked him up and went to the police station. When his wife questioned the cops, the CI pushed her." All the 6 women protesters as well as the husband of one of them, have now been charged for rioting by the Vaikkom police.SI said that they have not secured bail yet. thenewsminute

Sunni Ulema Council seeks jail term for those giving, validating instant talaq
http://www.hindustantimes.com/lucknow/sunni-ulema-council-seeks-jail-term-for-those-giving-validating-instant-talaq/story-Xng2rexXeYasI4skrwQ55N.html
Kanpur: Sunni Ulema Council has written to the union law ministry, demanding jail term for those giving or validating instant talaq, which the Supreme Court has declared unconstitutional. The Council’s position is at odds with the Jamiat-e-Ulema Hind’s hardline view of the Supreme Court verdict.Sunni Ulema Council’s first demand is that if a man gives his wife instant talaq, he should be made liable to fork out 10 times the Mehr, an essential payment the groom agrees to make at the time of nikah (marriage) to the woman. The amount is mentioned in the nikahnama (marriage contract). The 2 parties, along with their witnesses, sign it.At the same time, talaq giver should face 2 years’ imprisonment and be liable to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh. Another demand is that any cleric who validates triple talaq should face imprisonment of a year and a fine of Rs 1 lakh, which should be paid to the divorced woman.Haji Mohammad Salees, general secretary of the Ulema council, said:“We have told the law minister that without tough laws, the decision of the Supreme Court will be lost and this practice (instant talaq) will continue.” “This practice has darkened the innumerable lives of women and children. It is time to weed it out through law and awareness within the Muslim community,” he said. The council has suggested that the Govt  should constitute a committee of Muslim clerics and intellectuals with a mandate for abolition of this practice and complete adoption of the process of divorce as explained in the Quran, holy book of Muslims. Jamiat’s regional president Matinul Haq Osama Qasimi has been on record that no interference will be tolerated in the shariyat and the body was studying the order before it goes for a review. Jamiat is studying the SC order before it seeks a review. timesofindia

Hyderabad:Mir Quadir Ali, president, Anjuman-e-Qaza’at (council of qazis) Telangana State, says that the Govt  has no power to interfere with the affairs of the qazis.“It has no right to interfere in our affairs. However, we are open to suggestions for improving our work and records,” Quadir Ali said. When asked about the fee prescribed for solemnising nikah, he said that the council had in 2015 fixed Rs 2,000 as the fee. “It was fixed taking into consideration the prevailing economic conditions. Since then, there has been no hike. For poor families, qazis relax the fees on humanitarian grounds,” Ali said.He pointed out that all records pertaining to nikahs have been with utmost care since decades. “This requires a lot of effort and hard work. We get the uniform ‘nikahnama’ and other forms from the Wakf Board office,” Ali said. To this day, all qazis submit copies of the nikahnama with the archives department and the Wakf Board. “A separate ‘qazat’ section operates at Wakf Board office where marriage certificates are issued. The head of the section is again appointed with the consent of the council,”he said.Deccan Chronicle.

As the number of protesters increased, north division police deployed KSRP personnel.Senior army officials, including Commandant and Deputy Commandant visited the spot with hundreds of recruits. The situation turned volatile and the police feared things could go out of hand if the army men use their firearms against civilians. Raipur:While BJP Govt  in Chhattisgarh is under fire for deaths of more than 200 cows in cattle shelters run by local BJP leader Harish Verma, state govt agencies had been informed about suspected irregularities in operation and finances of at least one of these shelters back in Nov.2014. But despite the warning, Shagun Gaushala, one of the errant cow shelters, owned by BJP leader in Durg district, received nearly Rs 30 lakh in 2015-16 and 2016-17, official documents reveal. In 2014, Chhattisgarh Lok Aayog had instituted an inquiry, and named Shagun Gaushala in Rajpur village, Durg, among 27 errant cattle sheds that allegedly mismanaged grants from the Govt -run Chhattisgarh Gau Seva Aayog. Shagun Gaushala was the shelter where cows were first found dead on August 18. The BJP leader was arrested the following day and was suspended by the party subsequently.A document detailing investigation by Lok Aayog dated Nov 14, 2014 says Gau Seva Aayog (cattle welfare commission) gives grants for fodder, breeding, medicines, water, wells, sheds and use of dung and urine. “It has come to the notice of Lok Aayog that grants by the Govt to gaushalas for these reasons are not being spent for this purpose. Naroda Patiya riots case: Hearing over, Gujarat HC reserves verdict

Ahmedabad:A division bench of the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday concluded hearing on a batch of appeal petitions moved by 32 convicts, including former BJP leader and minister Maya Kodnani, in the 2002 Noroda Patiya riots case of the killing of 97 people — the worst post-Godhra communal violence incident.Justices Harsha Devani and AS Supehia reserved the verdict after arguments by lawyers representing the convicts, the prosecuting agency — the Supreme Court appointed-SIT — and victims got over. There are a total of 11 appeal petitions, including 4 by the SIT.While all the convicts have appealed against their convictions, SIT has filed petitions for enhancing sentences of three convicts, including ex-Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi. Bajrangi was sentenced to life in jail with a provision of remission, but SIT has challenged that there should not be remission for him.Besides, SIT has appealed against 7 accused, including sisters Ramila and Gita Rathod, who were acquitted by special court in 2012. Their brother Mukesh Rathod, who got life imprisonment, has also filed an appeal petition. The father of the siblings, Ratilal Rathod alias Bhavani, was also an accused, but he died during the trial. The victims have filed pleas against the acquittal of 29 people.SIT on Tuesday had submitted a 90-page written arguments against the appeal petitions moved by 32 convicts. On Wednesday, division bench hinted that the investigation of the case was not proper, while the manner in which FIR was lodged was a “shame”. indianexpress

Naqvi said that the order had been made ‘in the back date’ because on May 4, during the hearing, the public prosecutor said that there was no information about this order and demanded time for the information. After the last hearing, it was told that the order to deny prosecution recommendation for UP CM  Yogi Adityanath was issued on May 3.It was also said that in today’s era with availability of number of communication channels any information can be sent or received from one country to another in a moment. In such a situation, the lack of information on the order of May 3 is under scanner.Earlier in May, UP Govt  denied permission to the Allahabad High Court for the trial of Adityanath in the matter. Allahabad High Court has exempted Adityanath from personal appearance and has also allowed to ratify the writ petition.UP Advocate General Raghvendra Singh told the Allahabad HC that the principal secretary had denied permission to try the CM .Earlier, the HC had summoned the principal secretary and had directed him to bring all documents related to the case. indianexpress

Soon after Narendra Modi took charge as the PM  of the country, he announced several schemes for the welfare of minorities in the country. One such scheme was USTTAD, which was announced in the year 2014.Standing for the ‘Upgrading Skill and Training in Traditional Arts for Development’, USTTAD scheme, unfortunately, is yet to reach minorities of the country. Union ministry of minority affairs launched the scheme in 2015 from the Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi, with the hopes of turning the minority artisans into ‘Ustaad’ (skilled teachers). However, no one thought that the scheme for minority artisans and craftsmen would end up without the cognizance of minority itself. And the negligence started from the very base, where the scheme was launched, which is Varanasi. twocircles

Thanks to Hinduism, India doesn't have radical Islam, says Chinese Global Times: Economictimes
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/thanks-to-hinduism-india-doesnt-have-radical-islam-chinese-media/articleshow/60295266.cms
After China's climbdown on Doklam, the state-run media has softened its shrill tone against India. An article in Global Times appreciates Hinduism for preventing the spread of radical Islam. "Why does it seem that Muslims in India have remained largely apart from the radicalization that has happened to Muslim groups in other parts of the world?" the article raises the question, citing the Islamist unrest in other parts of Asia: "Indian Muslims seldom have extreme organizations compared with groups in many other Asian countries. In the southern part of Philippines, extremists backed by Islamic State have turned their occupied cities into horrible places. In southern Thailand, terror attacks staged by Muslim extremists take place almost every week." economictimes

SIMI Kochi case: Plea for jail shift dismissed
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/kerala/kerala/article19582966.ece
Kochi: Kerala High Court has dismissed a petition filed by 11 accused in a case relating to the holding of a secret training camp of the outlawed SIMI at Wagamon in Idukki in 2007 seeking a directive to shift them from a Bhopal jail to a prison in the State. According to the petition, some of the accused while serving sentences in Panayikulam case at the Central Prison at Viyyur had been transferred to a Sabarmati jail in connection with some criminal cases in Gujarat. Panayikulam case related to a secret meeting of the banned SIMI at Panayikulam in Aluva in 2006.At that time, accused in the Wagamon case were languishing in the Sabarmati jail. While the trial in the Wagamon case was in progress through videoconferencing, all the accused were shifted from the Sabarmati prison to the Bhopal Central Prison in cases registered in Indore. The petitioners pointed out that they were worried about their safety as eight SIMI activists lodged in the Bhopal jail were shot dead in an encounter with the jail officials. Besides, the petitioners were being treated cruelly and tortured in the Bhopal jail. They were being denied their basic needs and facilities. They also contended that as they were undertrial prisoners in the Wagamon case, shifting to a prison in the State would enable them to effectively participate in the trial. thehindu

In an age where social media and websites have become the easiest way to reach audiences, how feasible is it to start a print bilingual magazine? But then, profit has hardly ever been a major concern for Jayawant Hire, a resident of Ramabai Nagar, Mumbai and an Ambedkarite who is determined to restart his project:a magazine called Krantikari Janata after a break of nearly 11 years. 26 years ago, Hire launched Krantikari Janata to spread the movement of Ambedkar. Now in his mid-fifties, Jayawant Hire has witnessed and worked as, an important member of the Ambedkarite movement. When the magazine was launched, it was one of those remarkable magazines within Ambedkarite/Dalit literary tradition in Maharashtra that was established with the vision of strengthening the voice and literary resistance of Ambedkarite/ Dalit masses. Krantikari Janata was perhaps first magazine in Maharashtra that was simultaneously translated in Urdu from Marathi and published. TCN

Yangon:The suffocating smell of charred wood has followed 19-year-old Ahmed for days. On Saturday, a group of armed men set fire to his home village of Ywa Thai Kay. With flames licking his heels and the sound of bullets cutting through the air, Ahmed, who spoke under a pseudonym, was forced to flee his childhood home, desperately clutching his most prized possessions - his English books.Five days later, Ahmed is again facing the threat of arson, this time in the remote village of Myoma Kayin Dan where he and 2,000 other unarmed Rohingya civilians have sought refuge after losing their homes. Surrounding villages were burning on Wednesday. "There is a big river behind this village," said Ahmed in a phone interview. "The women and children will not be able to cross it. We are so worried because we are trapped between the river and the military with no food to eat."He continued: "If they start to burn this village, then we will all be in trouble; we have nowhere to go." "There is no ARSA here," Ahmed said, referring to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, the ethnic armed group which launched a series of attacks against dozens of government checkpoints last Friday, in which more than 70 were killed, including 12 security officers. "We informed the military that there are no fighters here, that they can come check for themselves, but instead they are firing their guns at us and burning down our houses … we don't have anywhere to go, everyone is distressed and people are trying to commit suicide," he said with despair. At least 109 people have died in the military operation and clashes that have followed last week's attack. According to the government, most of the victims are Rohingya fighters although members of the security forces and civilians are also included in that figure. In the past week, nearly 50,000 Rohingya Muslims have been on the run from the violence. About 27,000 of those fleeing have crossed the border into Bangladesh, while 20,000 are trapped in a no man's land between two nations, according to UN sources, Reuters reported Thursday. The bodies of 20 Rohingya women and children were today recovered from a capsized boat by Bangladeshi border guards. aljazeera

Cox's Bazar:Bangladesh coastguards today found the bodies of 17 Rohingya, many of them children, who drowned when their boats capsized as they fled violence in Myanmar that has forced at least 18,500 to seek refuge across the border.Officials in Bangladesh say growing numbers of Rohingya are trying to cross the Naf river that divides the two countries in rickety boats ill-equipped for the rough waters as they become increasingly desperate to escape. The International Organization for Migration said yesterday that at least 18,500 Rohingya had crossed into Bangladesh since fighting erupted in Myanmar's neighbouring Rakhine state six days earlier. One coast guard official who asked not to be named said the migrants were travelling on "rickety inland fishing boats" unsuitable for the choppy seas around Bangladesh. Yesterday, the bodies of two Rohingya women and two children washed up in Bangladesh after their boat capsized.Officials said two more boats capsized on Thursday, killing at least 17 people, many of them children. outlookindia

Cairo:An Egyptian court has decided to place 296 defendants loyal to the banned Muslim Brotherhood on the country's terror list for 3 years. The defendants admitted during investigations that they joined the group, which was deemed as hampering the rule of law and harming national unity through temptations to topple the ruling authority, according to the Cairo Criminal Court on Wednesday, Xinhua reported citing MENA news agency. On Tuesday, the court made a similar decision against 56 brotherhood defendants.Egypt has been launching a massive crackdown on the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group since ex-President Morsi, a brotherhood leader, was removed by the military in July 2013 after mass protests against his one-year rule.A later dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins in the capital and nearby Giza left about 1,000 killed and thousands more arrested and facing mass trials.A judicial panel in charge of the group’s capital chain has previously seized funds of several Brotherhood-run businesses including supermarkets and private schools.IANS
64 combatants dead in fierce fighting between Syrian regime & IS: Report
http://www.timesnownews.com/international/article/64-dead-in-fierce-fighting-between-syrian-regime-and-islamic-state-group-report/82135
Beirut: Fierce fighting between Syrian Govt  forces and the Islamic State group has killed 64 combatants in Raqa province over a 24-hour period, a monitoring group said on Wednesday. Clashes come with the army pressing an advance through Raqa, in northern Syria, towards neighbouring Deir Ezzor, the only remaining province of the war-ravaged country still in the hands of IS jihadists. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said the fighting had claimed the lives of 38 jihadists and 26 pro-regime combatants since Tuesday morning. It takes to 145 the overall death toll in six days of fighting in villages on the banks of the Euphrates River in the east of Raqa province, near Deir Ezzor. IS said in a statement on Tuesday that its members had killed dozens of regime combatants in "intense fighting lasting hours".AFP
US-led forces launch air strikes to stop IS reaching east Syria: Coalition
http://zeenews.india.com/world/us-led-forces-launch-air-strikes-to-stop-is-reaching-east-syria-coalition-2038042.html
Beirut: US-led warplanes on Wednesday blocked a convoy of Islamic State fighters and their families from reaching territory the group holds in east Syria and struck a group of their comrades travelling to meet them, a coalition spokesman said. The strikes were aimed at stopping an evacuation deal for Islamic State fighters to leave their enclave on the Lebanon-Syria border for areas they hold in eastern Syria, arranged by the Lebanese Hezbollah group and the Syrian army.It was part of a ceasefire agreed after offensives last week by the Lebanese army on one front, and the Syrian army and Hezbollah on another, that pushed IS back into a small part of its enclave straddling the frontier. US coalition strikes on Wednesday to block the convoy moving into IS territory took place east of Humeima in southeast Syria, near the edge of land held by the Syrian govt, coalition spokesman Ryan Dillon said.He did not know if the evacuation convoy, which contains buses of fighters and their family members, as well as ambulances carrying wounded fighters, was now in IS or Syrian govt territory. Separately, leader of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, defended Lebanese group`s involvement in the evacuation deal in a statement responding to criticism of the move from Iraqi PM  Haider al-Abadi. Two million Muslims gather near Mecca for Hajj
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/08/million-muslims-gather-mecca-hajj-170831063353542.html
Around 2 million Muslims are gathering near Saudi Arabia's Mecca for the peak day of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. From dawn to dusk on Thursday, the crowd will visit Mount Arafat to spend the day in supplication and contemplation.Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon on the granite hill more than 1,400 years ago."We hope that Allah will forgive our sins, and we hope to have a new start with our God," Khaled Ahmed, a 47-year-old pilgrim from Egypt, told the Associated Press news agency. In his sermon, the prophet is believed to have called on his followers to repay their debts, beware of Satan, perform five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan and give to charity. He also called on those with the means to do so to perform the Hajj once in a lifetime and reminded worshippers of women's rights. As Eid approaches, however, hope faded for residents of Qatar who wanted to perform Hajj following the Gulf diplomatic crisis."I want[ed] to go on Hajj but I am not allowed," Mohammed Shafiq, a resident of Doha from Pakistan, told Al Jazeera."The Saudi embassy is closed so how am I supposed to go? ... I am an old man [this could be my last chance] and maybe I will die tomorrow," said Shafiq, who has been working hard to finance his once-in-a-lifetime trip to Mecca. aljazeera
